Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs Abhishek Sharma: Two powerplay monsters, one place in IPL Qualifier 2

The 2026 Indian Premier League Eliminator match on Wednesday at the New PCA Stadium will determine the next playoff match, with one side advancing to Qualifier 2 and the other bowing out of the tournament.

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals face off in a high-stakes clash in the Eliminator, with the spotlight firmly on their openers -- Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi -- who have defined aggressiveness in the powerplay overs in recent years.

Earlier in the season, Abhishek and Vaibhav were dismissed cheaply in the SRH-RCB April 13 fixture. But the reverse fixture in Jaipur on April 25 was a spectacle, with the 15-year-old blasting a 37-ball hundred, and Abhishek hammering 57 off 29 deliveries.

Vaibhav redefines powerplay batting with solid numbers

Vaibhav has redefined powerplay batting in IPL 2026. The teenage cricketing powerhouse has showcased raw intent, smashing 430 runs at a strike rate of 231.18 and an average of 61.42 in the first six overs, as per ESPNCricinfo stats. The 15-year-old also struck 41 boundaries and 37 sixes in the powerplay overs, showcasing his fearless intent.

Vaibhav knows how to go big from ball one and has smashed sixes in the first ball against veteran pacers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Lungi Ngidi this season. However, the 15-year-old barely bats deep, as he rarely faces deliveries in the second half of their innings.

While Sooryavanshi brings the explosive start RR needs, their victory is not guaranteed. He struck a hundred against Hyderabad, but the Royals were defeated by five wickets.

Where do Abhishek's powerplay numbers stand?

Abhishek Sharma has also delivered consistent aggressive starts and can dominate the powerplay. In 14 matches so far in IPL 2026, he has put up 563 runs, with 369 coming from the first six overs.

As per Hindustan Times, Abhishek's dot-ball percentage stands at 30.0%, lower than Vaibhav’s 34.3%, while his overall batting average of 43.3 narrowly surpasses the young batter's 41.6. With proper match experience under his belt, Abhishek combines explosiveness as a destructive opener with the ability to bat deeper in the game.

But as we have seen above, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is only 15, is certainly ahead of the 25-year-old Abhishek Sharma when it comes to powerplay and it could prove to be the deciding factor when both franchises fight for a place in Qualifier 2.
