Shubman Gill pins India's loss on death-over lapses after England run riot: 'We gave away lot of runs'

India ODI captain Shubman Gill called out the team's failure to restrict England's runs in the death overs. The hosts' late surge helped them put up a staggering 388 runs on the scoreboard.

England sealed an emphatic 2-1 series lead after defeating India by 27 runs in the third one-day match at Lord's Cricket Ground on Sunday. Despite the top-order's clinical performance, including a commendable hundred from Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue failed to deliver their best in the series-decider showdown.

Gill: 'We were right in the game until...'

At the post-match press conference, Gill said that India were competitive until England's batting reached the 45th over, which is when the game slipped from their hands after conceding too many runs in the death overs.

He added that the team's chase strategy did not align, leading to England's victory in London.

"We were right in the game until the 45th over (when England batted). Gave away a lot of runs in the last three overs. That's where the game went away from us," Gill said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

"We thought if we had wickets in hand after 40 overs, we would be in the game. At the same time, we didn't want to be too far behind. After the powerplay, we tried to play at 6-6.5 runs per over and chase at 10 in the last 10 overs," Gill said.

Gill praised Rohit's batting flair

Despite India's defeat, Gill also drew some positives from Rohit and Virat Kohli's performance in the 3rd ODI. He expressed delight at how the Hitman batted on a surface which wasn't easy to bat on.

"They (Rohit and Kohli) have done well over the years in different parts of the world. Pleased with how Rohit batted today. The wicket got slow in the end, wasn't easy to bat, but a treat to watch," Gill added.

Following the England tour, India's next one-day assignment would be against the West Indies at home, starting September 27, 2026, at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
