Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaks Chris Gayle’s all-time IPL record with historic knock in IPL 2026 Eliminator
Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record during the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created history in IPL 2026 after breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a single IPL season.
The young Rajasthan Royals batter went past Gayle’s tally of 59 sixes during the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Gayle had achieved the feat for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2012 season.
Before the match, Sooryavanshi had already smashed 54 sixes in the tournament. He equalled Gayle’s record after hitting Sakib Hussain for a six over deep extra cover in the fourth over of the innings. Just three balls later, the teenager broke the all-time record with another massive hit over the same region.
What made the achievement even more remarkable was the speed at which he reached the milestone. Gayle took 456 balls to hit his 59 sixes in 2012, while Sooryavanshi crossed the mark in only 263 deliveries.
Most sixes in an IPL season
- 61* - Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (2026)
- 59 - Chris Gayle (2012)
- 52 - Andre Russell (2019)
- 51 - Chris Gayle (2013)
- 45 - Jos Buttler (2022)
Sooryavanshi goes past Rishabh Pant
The youngster looked unstoppable from the beginning of the innings. He attacked SRH captain Pat Cummins with fearless strokeplay and smashed three sixes in a single over. Cummins struggled to find answers as the RR opener played shots all around the ground.
Sooryavanshi also became the youngest player ever to score 600 runs in an IPL season. The previous record belonged to Rishabh Pant, who had achieved the milestone for Delhi Capitals in 2018, when the franchise was known as Delhi Daredevils. No batter in IPL history had previously crossed 600 runs in a season while maintaining a strike rate of more than 230.
The Rajasthan Royals opener gave his team a flying start in the Eliminator and completely dominated the SRH bowling attack. He reached his half-century in just 16 balls as RR reached 80 runs in the powerplay.
