Rohit Sharma fully fit or not? MI, BCCI give contrasting signals as suspense over opener's fitness grows

Rohit Sharma's fitness has come under fresh scrutiny after Mumbai Indians (MI) revealed that their former captain was fully fit going into their final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

MI take on Rajasthan Royals at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium in their 14th and final match of the season. For RR, it is a virtual knockout fixture while MI will be playing for pride, looking for their fifth win of season.

Rohit has missed a few games this season and has also participated as an impact substitution in some matches. His recent selection in the Indian ODI squad for matches against Afghanistan was also subject to fitness. In fact, reports have stated that his India future could also be in doubt due to his fitness concerns. However, MI believe that the opener is fully fit.

MI, BCCI at odds on Rohit Sharma

Rohit, alongisde his MI teammate Hardik Pandya, were selected in the 15-member squad for three ODIs against Afghanistan subject to fitness. Interestingly, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene talked of no such fitness concern when it comes to Rohit's selection for MI.

“Yes, he had a hamstring injury. We gave him the time that he needed to recover from that and then he came back," Jayawardene said ahead of his team's last match in 2026. “The first game also, we were cautious even with his batting, the way he was running because he had to adapt to it slowly, gradually coming back into it. But for me, the medical team, everything is 100%."

Jayawardene also said that the MI camp do not bother about India's requirements when he selects the team for MI.

“To be honest, I don’t think about the Indian team or what their requirement is when I am assembling a team for Mumbai Indians," Jayawardene said. “Rohit understands that he is a team player. He understands what is required for Mumbai Indians."

Rohit has been in good form this season with 283 runs in eight appearances, at an impressive strike rate of 160.70.
