RCB vs GT, IPL Qualifier 1: The Dharamsala blockbuster hinges on these three fiery player battles

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) is in its final week with Tuesday's Qualifier 1 showdown between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans in Dharamsala getting the playoffs underway. Defending champions RCB have been among the more consistent teams this season, keeping themselves in the playoffs zone throughout the league stage.

GT, on the other hand, bounced back in style in the second half after a shaky start, storming into the playoffs with six wins in their last seven outings, which included five wins on the trot. The Shubman Gill-led side finished level on 18 points with RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad as a result, though the Net Run Rate factor resulted in Bengaluru topping the table and Hyderabad finishing third.

RCB and GT had faced each other twice during the group stage, with the home team pulling off a successful chase on both occasions. They face each other in neutral territory – Dharamsala's picturesque HPCA Stadium – on Tuesday, and could even lock horns for a fourth time this season, should the loser of the upcoming clash go on to defeat the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2.

Ahead of the Royal Challengers vs Titans showdown in the Himalayas, we take a look at three player battles that could define the contest:

Virat Kohli vs Kagiso Rabada

Given the players that are currently dominating the Orange and Purple Cap lists, it's safe to assume that the powerplays of the upcoming contest in Dharamsala will have a major role to play in shaping the eventual result.

Virat Kohli has been in sparkling form this season, scoring 557 runs at an average and strike rate of 50.64 and 163.82, respectively, slamming a century and four fifties along the way. Rabada, on the other hand, is level with RCB's Bhuvneshwar Kumar on 24 wickets at the top of the 'Orange Cap' list but occupies the second spot due to a slightly inferior average and economy.

It's not just the fact that Kohli and Rabada have been among the top performers this season that makes this a battle to keep an eye on. They are also among the greatest players of their generation with bat and ball, respectively, and share a fierce rivalry that has spanned close to a decade now.

Shubman Gill vs Bhuvneshwar Kumar

GT captain Gill currently occupies the second spot among the leading run-scorers of the season, trailing opening partner and current Orange Cap holder Sai Sudharsan by 22 runs, though he has a slightly better strike rate (161.67). Bhuvneshwar, meanwhile, is the current owner of the Purple Cap, beating Rabada to the top thanks to his economy and average of 8.07 and 18.50, respectively.

'Bhuvi', however, has been remarkably consistent at delivering early breakthroughs for RCB this season, with his opening spell proving to be the difference between the Royal Challengers and Mumbai Indians in their last-ball thriller in Raipur. And the fact that he has dismissed Gill five times certainly makes this a battle to watch out for.

Rajat Patidar vs Rashid Khan

Neither RCB captain Rajat Patidar nor GT's star leg-spinner Rashid Khan are the top performers in the batting and bowling charts, respectively, but have made a huge impact for their respective teams and played important roles in their journey to the playoffs.

Patidar, for one, has collected 393 runs at a strike rate of 183.64, collecting four half-centuries along the way. Rashid, on the other hand, has bounced back in style after a couple of underwhelming seasons, occupying the fifth spot on the Purple Cap list with 19 wickets.

And while the aforementioned powerplay battles will no doubt have a significant impact on the outcome of Qualifier 1, this mini-battle in the middle overs isn't one to be ignored either. Especially considering the fact that Patidar is one of the better players of spin in the Royal Challengers batting lineup and finds himself facing one of the world's best.
