Jasprit Bumrah finishes with horror record after being rested for MI-RR clash at Wankhede

Jasprit Bumrah finished with an unwanted record against his name after being rested for Mumbai Indians' final match of the 2026 Indian Premier League, against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

With Shardul Thakur replacing Bumrah in the MI XI, the latter finished with just four wickets to his name in 13 matches. While Bumrah signed off with an economy rate of 8.36, the best for a Mumbai Indians bowler, it's his average of 102.50 that has made it a season to forget for India's premier paceman.

Bumrah scores an unwanted century

Bumrah, in the process, became the first bowler in T20 history to finish with an average above 100 after bowling a minimum of 40 overs in a tournament. And this coming from a bowler who averages a staggering 19.79 for his 234 Test wickets in 52 appearances, and 18.08 for 121 T20I wickets.

The 32-year-old speedster had played a key role in helping India successfully defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil earlier this year, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets at an average and economy of 12.42 and 6.21 respectively, including a match-winning 4/15 in the final.

Bumrah's form, however, nosedived in the ongoing IPL season, where he had finished wicketless in nine out of 13 games, collected his first wicket in MI's sixth game of the season. It's worth noting, however, that the senior pacer had finished with an economy under 7 in three of the four matches in which he collected a wicket.

Royals post challenging total in must-win clash

MI's decision to rest their premier pacer meant there was no second showdown between Bumrah and young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – who had smashed him for a flurry of sixes when the two sides had faced off at Guwahati's Barsapara Stadium earlier this season.

As for the ongoing match, RR posted 205/8 after being asked to bat by MI, with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel top-scoring for the Royals with a knock of 38 off 26.

While Mumbai are already eliminated from the playoffs race, Rajasthan will be hoping to clinch the fourth and final spot for the playoffs and knock Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders out with a victory.
