IPL 2026 playoffs: Ranking all four teams from strongest to weakest

It took the final day of the league stage to decide the four playoff teams. Rajasthan Royals secured the final remaining berth after defeating Mumbai Indians in the afternoon game on Sunday, which eliminated Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders from the race and confirmed RR’s place in the IPL 2026 playoffs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad had already confirmed their spots earlier this week, with RCB and GT finishing in the top two and set to play Qualifier 1 in Dharamsala on May 26. SRH and RR will meet in the Eliminator in New Chandigarh a day later. The winner of that clash will face either RCB or GT in Qualifier 2 at the same venue on May 29.

The top three teams in the IPL 2026 table finished level on 18 points, with only Net Run Rate deciding their positions. RR qualified with 16 points. This shows how competitive the league has become over the years. It is very difficult to rank teams from strongest to weakest.

Based purely on the points table, RR might appear to be the weakest of all, but that would not be a fair assessment. So, let’s analyse the performances of all teams in the IPL 2026 league stage and rank them accordingly.

1. RCB - most complete unit

The defending champions have been one of the most complete teams in the IPL 2026 season. Their batting, bowling, and fielding have all been top notch. Virat Kohli has once again shown why he is called a legend of Indian cricket with another 500-plus run season in the bag.

Meanwhile, their top-order and middle-order batting have remained solid, with players like Phil Salt, Rajat Patidar, Venkatesh Iyer, and Devdutt Padikkal all firing when needed. Finishers like Tim David and Krunal Pandya have also stepped up in several matches, showing the depth in their batting.

Their bowling has been equally impressive. Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have delivered in both powerplay and death overs, while Krunal Pandya’s variations have been unexpected but valuable. Bhuvi is also among the top wicket-takers and is currently in the Purple Cap race. RCB’s fielding has also been excellent.

2. SRH - most explosive team

There is not much to separate the top three teams, but Hyderabad take the number two spot mainly because of their batting power. Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen have been in the best form of their careers. They have single-handedly taken several matches away from opponents with their aggressive batting. The team has the ability to post mammoth totals and has shown that consistently throughout the league stage.

SRH’s bowling has also been standout this season, especially because of breakthrough performances from debutant Sakib Hussain and Sri Lankan youngster Eshan Malinga. Captain Pat Cummins has also delivered several clutch bowling performances since returning from an injury break that forced him to miss the first few matches.

3. GT - consistent but minor concern

Gujarat Titans have been one of the most consistent teams this season, and it shows in the stats as well. Their openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill occupy the top two spots in the Orange Cap race at the end of the league stage. Jos Buttler has also found his rhythm this season with several match-winning knocks. However, Gujarat’s middle order has been a concern, as they have not received many opportunities to be tested due to the dominance of the top order.

Their bowling has also performed exceptionally well, with players like Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj troubling batters with both new ball and death-over spells. Rashid Khan has also regained his form, while others including Prasidh Krishna and Jason Holder have contributed significantly. GT’s fielding has also been very good and among the best in the tournament.

4. RR - strong finish, but most inconsistent

RR started the season strongly, with players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal firing with the bat and their bowlers doing the job as well. But their performances dipped in the middle of the season with three consecutive losses at one stage. However, the inaugural champions bounced back in time to take the final playoff spot, with their destiny largely in their own hands till the last game.

This was Riyan Parag’s first year as full-time captain, and he has justified the trust placed in him by the management even though his performance with the bat has not been below-par. Meanwhile, players like Dhruv Jurel and Nandre Burger also stepped up significantly. Jofra Archer regained his form at the right time and delivered when the team needed him the most.

However, their overall campaign has lacked consistency, and on paper they look the most vulnerable side entering the knockout stage.
