CSK CEO drops hints on MS Dhoni's future after IPL 2026 no-show: 'Would have him as...'

Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan made a huge disclosure on MS Dhoni's status, suggesting that the veteran could stay as a 'permanent fixture' in the franchise at any capacity.

Dhoni was a no-show throughout the entire 2026 Indian Premier League due to a calf injury, fueling speculation that the season might have been his farewell. The anticipation was sky-high when he appeared at CSK's final league-stage match in Chepauk, though skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed that he is yet to gain full fitness.

MSD also missed the team's final league-stage fixture against the Gujarat Titans. It was the first time the veteran missed out on action for the entire season since IPL's inception in 2008.

CSK CEO offers key hint on Dhoni's future

While speaking to Revsportz, the CSK CEO remained tight-lipped about his future but acknowledged that the team would welcome Dhoni in any role -- player, mentor, or coach -- but emphasised that the decision rests entirely with him.

“We have not discussed anything with MS as of now because, as you know, MS takes his decisions on his own, and we respect that. We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture at CSK in whatever capacity — be it as a player, coach or mentor. Whatever it is, it depends on what he decides. Every decision depends on him,” Kasi said.

Will Dhoni become the new franchise head coach?

The franchise CEO's remarks came as CSK faced scrutiny over their coaching unit, with head coach Stephen Fleming under pressure after the team missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

Speculation has grown about a possible overhaul after the Chennai Super Kings finished eighth in the standings, securing 12 points after six wins and eight losses in 2026. Notably, the prospect of Dhoni becoming the next CSK coach has been seconded by former India star R Ashwin.

While it is unknown whether Dhoni transitions into coaching, his influence at CSK would persist beyond his playing days.
