Team India endured their first defeat of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 after South Africa secured a six-wicket victory on Sunday at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Marizanne Kapp played anchor during the chase, scoring an unbeaten 81 as the Proteas Women sealed a convincing win over the Women in Blue.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team India's recent defeat in Manchester has made their path to the semi-finals difficult, and they cannot afford any mistakes at this stage to stay in contention for the knockouts.

Team India's path to knockouts gets complicated

The Indian women's cricket team has two group-stage matches left, one against Bangladesh on Thursday and the second against Australia on June 28 at Lord's. Both fixtures have become crucial for the Women in Blue.

How can India qualify for the Women's T20 World Cup semifinals?

Team India’s path to the semifinals is straightforward: Win the remaining group-stage matches to strengthen their chances of advancing. The Women in Blue would also qualify if either Australia or South Africa stumble in one of their upcoming fixtures.

The Indian Women's team can also qualify if they defeat Bangladesh but fall to Australia. In that case, they would finish with six points, and South Africa needs to lose one of their remaining matches. Both sides would be level in points, but India would advance as they have a better net run rate (NRR) over the Proteas Women.

If Australia, India and South Africa finish the group stage at eight points, the two teams with better NRR would advance to the semi-finals. For the Women in Blue, maintaining a higher NRR would be crucial in such a case.

India will face Bangladesh on Thursday, June 25, at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Stretford, Manchester, from 07:00 PM IST
