‘Virat Kohli was disappointed’: GT assistant coach reveals post-match chat with RCB superstar at Chinnaswamy

Virat Kohli was "disappointed" with himself despite delivering a match-winning knock for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League, Gujarat Titans assistant coach Vijay Dahiya revealed after their match on Friday.

Kohli led the way with a superb 81 off just 44 balls, silencing critics of his scoring rate by striking at 184.09 with the help of eight fours and four sixes, as RCB chased down the 206-run target set by GT at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium with five wickets and more than an over to spare.

The former India and RCB captain, however, was disappointed at not converting his third half-century of the season into a century – which would have been his ninth in the IPL. Dahiya revealed having a post-match chat with the batting superstar in which the latter shared his thoughts on his knock.

"I think it's amazing. If you look at his energy. One thing is about skill, one thing is about game sense. But his awareness, his energy and his willingness. After the game, I was just having a chat with him, and he was disappointed. He was saying that I could have converted this into a 100. I said, 'It's for somebody who doesn't know how to do it. You have been doing it day in and day out'. He made the surface look really easy. It wasn't an easy wicket," Dahiya told reporters in the post-match press conference.

"When you are playing and when you are commanding the situation, you make the bowler bowl where you want him to bowl. And that's the kind of innings Virat has played. Put pressure on the bowlers. And world-class bowlers. That's what Virat Kohli is all about. It's his mindset that sets him apart from many people. He's one of the best runners so far; he's pushing the youngsters on his side," the former India wicketkeeper added.

Kohli stitched a 117-run stand for the second wicket with Devdutt Padikkal along the way, helping the Royal Challengers recover from the early dismissal of Jacob Bethell – who made his first appearance of the ongoing season after replacing fellow Englishman Phil Salt at the top of the order.

The partnership not only brought RCB back in the hunt, it also laid the foundation for the successful chase, with Bengaluru cruising to victory despite losing wickets in a flurry with the finish line in sight.

RCB close gap with PBKS after signing off from Chinnaswamy with win

RCB played their final game of the 19th IPL season at the Chinnaswamy – which had been given clearance to host matches just days before the opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad – on Friday, signing off on a happy note. They will be playing their remaining home fixtures of the season at Raipur's Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, starting with the match against struggling Mumbai Indians on 10 May.

The victory helped RCB leapfrog Rajasthan Royals to the second spot on the points table. Both teams have 10 points from seven games at the halfway stage of the season, but it's the Royal Challengers who have the better Net Run Rate (1.101).

Punjab Kings continue to top the table with 11 points in six outings, and the Shreyas Iyer-led side are the only team to have not lost a single match so far. Together with RCB and RR, PBKS is a front-runner to qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
