Explained: Why BCCI has allowed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's parents to accompany teenager to Ireland and England

Rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had been rewarded for a record-breaking Indian Premier League season with a maiden India call-up shortly after. The teenager has been included in India's T20I squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England as well as the Asian Games later this year, and could end up making his debut later this month.

The Rajasthan Royals star had become the youngest cricketer in the history of the IPL last year. And a little over a week from now, Sooryavanshi could become the youngest ever to represent the senior Indian men's team at just 15 years of age, breaking the record set by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in 1989.

What will be the long-awaited debut even more special for Sooryavanshi is the fact that his parents will be watching him from the stands in Belfast as well as in Manchester and other venues in England.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, after all, has allowed the Boss Baby's parents to accompany him to the United Kingdom, where India play two T20Is against Ireland followed by five 20-over fixtures in England.

'At one point in time, it was Sachin Tendulkar...'

And on Thursday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained the rationale behind the special gesture for India's most promising young talent, citing Tendulkar's example as to why special measures need to be taken for individuals under the age of 18 playing at the senior level.

"You see, not all national teams at the senior level have a 14 or 15-year-old in their squad. After many decades, we have someone like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi," Saikia told news agency Press Trust of India.

"At one point in time, it was Sachin Tendulkar who made it to the national team at such a young age. When such a young kid is part of the senior team, there are obviously a lot of issues that can crop up. Therefore, to make him comfortable and help him get used to an adult environment, where all the other players are above 18 years of age, and the team management members are also adults, we felt it would be helpful.

"So, we thought it proper to allow his parents to travel with him. I am very happy that his parents are also taking good care of their kid, who is an asset for Indian cricket not only now but for the next two or three decades," he added.

Sooryavanshi is currently representing India A in the ongoing triangular series in Sri Lanka, where he had recently been involved in an on-field altercation with some members of the Sri Lanka A team.

The BCCI is yet to punish the youngster for the controversial episode, which took place in Dambulla where all the other matches in the series are taking place, but are still considering taking some form of action.

The upcoming T20Is mark the beginning of defending champions India's road to the 2028 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. And given his recent heroics, Sooryavanshi is expected to play an important role in the Men in Blue's journey over the next two years.
