How Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be accommodated in India's playing XI in Ireland

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi would be the cynosure of all eyes during Team India's away T20 tours in Ireland and England. The 15-year-old batting prodigy made history after becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to receive his maiden India call-up.

The left-handed opener's blazing performance in the 2026 Indian Premier League, where he won the Orange Cap with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30, proved that he is destined for greatness. Vaibhav also put up a record-breaking performance while representing India A at the tri-series final, scoring 94 off just 29 deliveries – the fastest half-century in List-A cricket history for India.

Vaibhav would now hope to take the next big step and fulfill the dream of representing the senior Indian team in the upcoming T20 tours. However, drafting him into the playing XI for the Men in Blue right away will be quite the headache for the team leadership.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play for India in Ireland?

While the upcoming two-match T20I series is against Ireland and the Indian team management could experiment in those games, it would also be India's first series after the 2026 T20 World Cup victory. As a result, there's a question mark over Vaibhav’s immediate inclusion in the playing XI given the squad’s established top-order depth featuring Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan.

Vaibhav's inclusion only makes sense as an opener, either alongside Abhishek or Samson, which means one of them will have to be pushed down to number three or out of the team.

But giving preference to the senior players also makes sense considering they need to be in rhythm ahead of the highly competitive T20I series against England. Benching Abhishek, Samson or Kishan just for Vaibhav's debut thus could disrupt their tempo.

The 15-year-old thus could be benched in the Ireland series, delaying his highly-anticipated India debut. But it would allow him to acclimatise to the senior team's environment and also gain some crucial training with the coaching staff.

Notably, Vaibhav would be accompanied by his parents throughout the Ireland and England tours, with the BCCI bearing all expenses. Secretary Devajit Saikia pointed out that it would be helpful for the young kid to have his parents beside him throughout the tour.

In terms of an ideal squad for the India vs Ireland T20 series, Abhishek, Samson and Kishan should headline the top-order to provide stability, and Vaibhav remains benched for both games.

Does Vaibhav's possible debut against England make sense?

Team India's T20 series against England is touted as the platform for Vaibhav to make his debut. It goes without saying that the management would be cautious with the 15-year-old.

With five matches, squad rotation is more likely than in the Ireland T20s, opening opportunities for the young batter.

However, the team management may prefer to ease him in gradually, and it’s entirely possible that even the England series won’t be the stage where he gets to make his debut. 

Hypothetically, if Vaibhav does make his debut, the most plausible way for the team management to accommodate him in India’s playing XI against England would be by shifting Samson to the No 3 spot or having the Kerala batter on the bench.

The 15-year-old could be slotted at the expense of Ishan Kishan, but it would be less likely since Kishan provides crucial balance and explosiveness with the left hand.

For many, Vaibhav would be seen as a direct competitor to Abhishek, who had been fast-tracked into the Indian team in a similar manner two years ago and has firmly established himself as the first-choice opener in the format since then.

Captain Shreyas and head coach Gautam Gambhir could slot him in place of the Sunrisers Hyderabad opener, given their similarities, in order to avoid having a left-heavy top-order, which was a major talking point in the recent T20 World Cup.

Vaibhav’s potential debut is set to be a major talking point during India’s tours of Ireland and the UK. Many might believe that his inclusion seems likely during the later matches of the England series if the team management tries new talent in testing conditions. 

But if that's the case, they could also test Vaibhav against Ireland, a squad posing less competition than England, to provide him with play time.

The 15-year-old's inclusion could be more about providing exposure with the senior team as they groom him to develop the cricketer into a big-match player. As of now, whether Sooryavanshi makes his debut is not guaranteed.

But it will be a major surprise for the Indian cricket community if he does not get a single game throughout the tour.

Team India will face Ireland in the first T20I match on Friday, June 26, at the Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
