Tim David set to miss opening game of RCB's title defence in IPL 2027; here's why

Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David is set to miss the opening game of his team's title defence next year after helping his team win back-to-back Indian Premier League seasons with a victory over Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

David, after all, has been handed a one-game suspension and fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL's Code of Conduct during Sunday's final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where the Australian batter chipped in with a 17-ball 24 in RCB's five-wicket victory over GT.

David, after all, was found guilty of throwing an ice bag "aggressively" in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon during the final, which resulted in him collecting two demerit points that took his season tally to five, triggering a one-game suspension.

"Tim David, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and has also accumulated two Demerit Points for breaching Level 1 of the IPL's Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials," read an official statement from the IPL.

"David was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which relates to 'throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match'," it added.

David admitted to his offence, which had occurred during the 10th over of GT's innings after the fall of a wicket, and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.

David's previous offences in IPL 2026

It was the third time David was found guilty of breaching the IPL's Code of Conduct in the 19th IPL season, with both of the previous instances occurring against Mumbai Indians.

The big-hitting Aussie batter had accumulated two demerit points and fined 30 per cent of his match fee after breaching Article 2.6, which relates to "using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting", during RCB's 'home' game against the five-time champions in Raipur on 10 May.

And in the home game against MI at the Wankhede Stadium on 12 April, nearly a month earlier, David was found guilty of breaching Article 2.4, which relates to "disobeying an umpire’s instruction during a match", for which he was fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point.
