T20 World Cup match-fixing scandal: Canadian cricketer approached authorities citing safety fears, new details emerge

Cricket Canada is under scanner once again as a new report has now claimed that a player, feeling unsafe, reached out to the authorities in Sri Lanka and was provided with extra security.

Cricket Canada is already facing serious accusations of match-fixing and corruption during the recent T20 Word Cup. The allegations of corruption during the World Cup have rocked Canadian cricket with captain Dilpreet Bajwa under scanner for his alleged role in the controversy.

Now local media has unveiled fresh details regarding the situation which is looking worse with every passing day.

Canada cricketer 'felt unsafe' during T20 World Cup

Toronto Sun, an English language daily in Canada, has revealed that one of the players in the Canadian cricket team for the T20 World Cup was given additional security due to safety issues.

This player reportedly approached the authorities in Sri Lanka saying that he was feeling unsafe and was provided with additional security for the duration of the tournament. The player stayed back in Sri Lanka after the completion of the tournament and has now returned to Canada.

An earlier report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) had directly linked the Lawrence Bishnoi group to be behind the scandal. The group has been termed a terrorist entity in Canada and its link to the matter have raised concerns over the safety of the people involved.

Cricket Canada chief denies allegations

The elevation of Bajwa as the captain just weeks before the T20 World Cup raised eyebrows at that time and now with accusations of corruption emerging, that decision is under the eyes of authorities. The CBC documentary which first unveiled the fixing allegations had said that Arvinder Khosa, the head of Cricket Canada, was behind the decision to promote Bajwa as captain.

However, Khosa has denied any involvement. “I cannot believe that the documentary involved me in Bajwa’s promotion. I was not even in Cricket Canada at the time and had no say in the matter," Khosa was quoted as saying by the Toronto Sun.

ICC is currently investigating the corruption charges with Bajwa in focus. Bajwa is being accused of taking odd decisions during Canada's loss to New Zealand in the 2026 tournament.
