Suryakumar Yadav dealing with dodgy wrist for a year, batted through pain during T20 World Cup: Report

Suryakumar Yadav's reign as India's T20I captain appears to have reached its conclusion with the historic T20 World Cup triumph in March as latest reports suggest Punjab Kings skipper and fellow Mumbaikar Shreyas Iyer is in line to succeed him in the role.

Surya's future in the Indian team, at the same time, is also in doubt. The 35-year-old has, after all, has largely been underwhelming with the bat for more than a year now, and might not have been included in India's T20 World Cup squad in the first place had he not been leading the Men in Blue.

Even in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, the Mumbai Indians star has collected 195 runs in 10 outings at an average and strike rate of 19.50 and 145.52 respectively, collecting one half-century along the way.

How Surya has been managing a dodgy wrist for more than a year

According to The Times of India, a long-running wrist issue is likely the reason behind his mixed run with the bat, with 'SKY' having batted through pain since the IPL last year. A clip shared on TOI's website shows Surya getting his wrist taped up by the team doctor at what appears to be a Team India training session, which the report claims was his drill every time he walked out to bat in the nets at the recent World Cup.

Surya is believed to have carefully managed the wrist problem and kept it under wraps all this time, going to the extent of avoiding exercises that could put strain on his dodgy wrist. And as a measure of precaution, 'SKY' right wrist remained heavily taped and padded even while fielding.

Surya had played a key role in helping Mumbai Indians reach the playoffs last year, scoring 717 runs at an average and strike rate of 65.18 and 167.91 respectively as the five-time champions went as far as Qualifier 2. His numbers for the Indian team, however, told a different story – 218 runs at an average and strike rate of 13.62 and 123.16 respectively.

He managed to resurrect his form during the five-match T20I series against New Zealand right before the T20 World Cup and had scored a superb 84 not out on a tough Wankhede wicket in India's opening game of the mega tournament against USA.

His form, however, appears to have tapered once again since that heroic innings against the Americans, leading to doubts over his place in the Indian squad for the white-ball tour of Ireland and England after the conclusion of the ongoing IPL.
