Suryakumar Yadav's India T20 captaincy can become a debate if he fails with bat in England: Report

Suryakumar Yadav's prolonged poor form in the T20Is could finally pinch him, forcing him to lose captaincy if he doesn't bounce back with the bat in the upcoming tour of England and Ireland in June-July. Popularly called SKY, the Indian T20I captain recently led the Men in Blue to a record third T20 World Cup.

Under Suryakumar, India became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup crown and to win the title at home. But his batting has been very ordinary. He scored just one fifty in 2025 and had a strike rate of less than 120. It jumped to 160 in 2026 as SKY made four fifties, but his performance in the T20 World Cup was much below expectations.

BCCI to rethink SKY captaincy in T20?

Besides the fifty against the USA in the opening match, Suryakumar didn't make any notable contributions. In big matches, his scores were 18 (against South Africa), 18 (against West Indies), 11 vs England (semi-final) and 0 in the final against New Zealand.

A BCCI source has now said that the selectors may move on from Suryakumar as India's T20 captain if he doesn't improve his batting numbers drastically during the T20Is in England and Ireland.

"Obviously, Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK, but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based," a BCCI source told news agency PTI on condition of anonymity.

The report added that SKY remains a favourite for head coach Gautam Gambhir, but with India training their guns at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics gold medal, there could be a discussion over captaincy and Suryakumar if his batting doesn't improve.

Suryakumar will be 38 by the time the Olympics arrive.
