The fall of Suryakumar era: Tracing the decline of India’s T20 cricketing phenom

Indian cricket marked the end of an era on Wednesday. Suryakumar Yadav's tenure as India's T20 captain is reportedly over, and the selectors are ready to move on.

According to BCCI sources, the decision to go with a new skipper was made by the selection committee and top BCCI officials, with head coach Gautam Gambhir’s consultation.

India enters this transition fresh off a historic 2026 T20 World Cup triumph, with Suryakumar leading the charge. The pressure was immense as the team hosted the tournament at home, yet they delivered a memorable performance.

Suryakumar Yadav: A transitional captain who made history

Dodging the favourites like Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav began his full-time captaincy run in July 2024 after stepping in as Rohit Sharma's successor, who retired after Team India's win at the T20 World Cup 2024 Final in Barbados. His spectacular boundary catch against South Africa in that summit clash remains iconic among Indian cricket fans.

What defined his tenure was an exceptional win percentage, among the best in India’s T20I history.

Under SKY's leadership, India sealed bilateral series wins over Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, and New Zealand. He brought an aggressive mindset and tactical ability that helped maintain India's authority in the game's shortest format.

Suryakumar's willingness to back young players in high-pressure situations became a hallmark of his captaincy. Some of those who flourished after backing from SKY and team management are Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan and  Harshit Rana.

Some of Suryakumar's most memorable achievements as T20I captain include India's victory in the 2025 Asia Cup. The team won all seven matches and defeated Pakistan in a gripping final.

SKY went on to lead the Men in Blue's charge in the T20 World Cup 2026, where they won eight out of nine matches, becoming the first team to defend the crown and win it at home.

From dominance to doubt, the slow fade of the SKY era

While Team India enjoyed a consistent win streak in T20Is under Suryakumar's leadership, his personal numbers narrate a different story. Before assuming captaincy duties, he averaged 43.40 at a strike rate of 168.17, smashing three centuries and 17 fifties.

But after he was made captain, SKY's average dropped to 28.65 with a strike rate of 154.96 and managed to score just one hundred and eight half-centuries.

The Indian batter's struggles extended to the 2026 IPL season, where he failed to yield big numbers, scoring just 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.77 and a strike rate of 147.54.

With Team India's focus now shifting towards the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle, the 35-year-old SKY's dip in form became a decisive factor in the BCCI's decision to move on from him as captain.

While it's not the most ideal end, Suryakumar Yadav's reign marked a major transition phase for Team India. While his batting faltered, his leadership skills helped deliver proper stability and T20 World Cup silverware.

His era was brief yet historic, ensuring his place in the record books as a World Cup-winning captain and a key figure in India’s evolving T20 journey.
