‘Does not make sense’ - Tom Moody lashes out at Delhi Capitals for benching Prithvi Shaw

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody has expressed surprise over the continued omission of Prithvi Shaw from the Delhi Capitals' (DC) playing XI. He said that this decision "doesn't make sense” and that the management should revisit their tactics and play the right-hander in the matches ahead.

Moody acknowledged Shaw had poor performances in recent editions, but said that he should be given preference over Ricky Bhui since Shaw is an international cricketer and has more experience to deal with high pressure scenarios.

Moody said, "It doesn't make sense due to the fact that you've got an Indian international player (Prithvi Shaw) in the dugout. Yes, he hasn't performed in the IPL like we had all hoped he would, but you can't score runs from the dugout," he said on ESPNCricinfo.

Shaw was not picked for the first two of matches for Delhi Capitals as the management opted to go with Ricky Bhui, who had a stellar domestic campaign. However, he did not got going in both matches, bagging scores of 3 and 0 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), respectively.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer, too, expressed surprise over Delhi's decision not to play Shaw despite retaining him for IPL 2024. Jaffer said, "Now that they have held onto him and not let him go into the auction, I'm surprised they're not playing him. He's played for Mumbai for most of the season, so you'd imagine that he's fit. I'm surprised. Punishing him and then losing the games is not the way to go forward."

Shaw came under the scanner for a woeful campaign last year where he could only manage 106 runs from eight innings at an average of 13.25.

This season, Delhi Capitals have opted for Mitchell Marsh and David Warner as their openers while Bhui has batted at number 3. However, as was the case last season, their top order has not given them good starts yet.

Led by Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals will be keen to get off the mark when they take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
