As per Cricbuzz, “BCCI will also consider requests for assistance from the Cricket Board of Maldives and Cricket Fiji. Board officials are expected to deliberate on the support that can be extended to the two international boards. There is also a pending application from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands seeking affiliation, and that matter is set to come up for discussion in the virtual meeting.”

Hardik Pandya had led as India’s T20I captain from late 2022 to 2023 after Rohit Sharma decided to briefly step away from the 20-over format.

He was later not considered for the role when Rohit decided to retire from the format along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja following India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and it’s highly unlikely he will be considered for the role following Suryakumar Yadav’s ouster either.

Suryakumar Yadav’s win percentage as India T20I captain stands at a staggering 76.92 per cent – the best after Mumbai Indians teammate Rohit Sharma.

After signing off from IPL 2026 with 270 runs at a strike rate of 147.54, Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for just 19 off 12 deliveries while playing for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the Mumbai T20 League, extending his underwhelming run with the bat.

Cricbuzz understands that there was no mention of the India T20I captaincy issue in the Apex Council agenda. Notably, the Apex Council is not the forum to deliberate on selection matters. It falls within the jurisdiction of the national selection committee.

According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI is set to draft a retirement policy for Indian cricketers, a move prompted by several players stepping away from international and domestic cricket to participate in overseas leagues. The matter will be taken up during tonight’s Apex Council meeting.

With Team India set to kick off its new T20 cycle against Ireland, let’s take a look at the predicted squad for the upcoming series.

“Even in the World Cup, Suryakumar’s form was very indifferent, and that has continued in the IPL. I think the selectors have to look ahead (now),” Saba Karim said to PTI.

Reports have mentioned that Suryakumar Yadav has been “nursing a wrist injury,” something which has affected his aggressive batting approach lately.

The Indian batter failed to deliver in the IPL as well, scoring just 270 runs in 13 matches at a 20.77 average and a strike rate of 147.54.

Suryakumar Yadav showed poise as Team India’s T20I captain, delivering series victories and title victories across tournaments. However, his personal form took a dip amid captaincy pressure, leading to his reported removal from the T20 unit.

Following the 2026 Indian Premier League, the Men in Blue will start a fresh T20 World Cup Cycle leading to the 2028 World Cup. India will face Ireland in a two-match series to start the cycle and begin their extensive away tour.

The IND vs IRE series takes place on July 26-28, following which the team will travel to England for a white-ball series, starting July 1st.

Shubman Gill is already the Test and ODI captain for India, but he was not part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign this year. However, the Indian skipper showed composure in IPL 2026, scoring 732 runs in 16 matches. He also led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2026 Final, where they finished as runners-up.

Whether the selectors would make Gill an all-format captain is yet to be seen, as his inclusion might disrupt India’s settled top-order.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s phenomenal batting performance in IPL 2026 prompted calls to fast-track him into India’s senior T20 team. Cricbuzz reported that the Ajir Agarkar-led selectors are “preparing to pick” him. Reports added that “it is understood that the selectors are seriously considering handing the Rajasthan Royals batter the national cap.”

According to Cricbuzz, the selectors are expected to take a look at Rajat Patidar as a potential replacement for Suryakumar Yadav in the batting line-up. He became the third IPL skipper after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to secure back-to-back IPL titles and delivered a strong performance throughout the season.

Patidar would be a tempting pick to for the selectors as they aim to build a strong squad for future T20I tournaments and series.

Given that Suryakumar Yadav is set to be dropped from India’s T20 team, speculations have risen about who would take his spot in the middle order.

Shreyas Iyer emerges as a solid pick at number four due to his stability and aggressiveness in the middle order.

Rajat Patidar’s recent IPL performance has also sparked India T20 debut chatter. His consistency makes him a strong contender for the role.

SKY was reportedly given a longer rope due to circumstances otherwise selectors had decided to move on long back.

Today’s Apex Council meeting will bring an end to Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure as India T20I captain, it has been reported. The selection committee is moving on from SKY. The Council will give a green signal to the selection committee about having the new T20I captain in their next selection meeting, i.e., for the UK white-ball tour, and the Asian Games, which is to be picked on June 6.

BCCI official to Indian Express: “The selection committee, BCCI & team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form & future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on – He won’t be considered for selection and the decision will be conveyed to Surya soon”.

The decision to remove Suryakumar is expected to be formalised today in the apex Council meeting, but things may not get official as it is the selectors who have to make the announcement. The selectors will be meeting on 6 June and they will pick a new captain on that day.

A report states that BCCI selectors were ready to sack Suryakumar before T20 World Cup 2026 due to his poor form and were grooming Shubman Gill for the position. But Gill’s personal poor form extended SKY’s stay as the captain.

The BCCI selectors apparently are not keen on Samson as replacement of Surya.

“It’s no secret that Gambhir’s choice is Sanju Samson who had a wonderful knockout phase during the T20 World Cup, but the selectors aren’t convinced that either the Kerala blaster or Ishan Kishan could be consistent for a prolonged period of time,” a PTI report read.

“The selectors would be dropping him from long list and had given an indication that Surya is now out of their scheme of things,” the source told PTI.

“Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma are contenders to become next T20 captain.”

“Surya is set to be removed from captaincy. The selectors wanted to wait till the end of IPL to see whether he can get back to form. Since he looked completely out of form and not just out of runs… a tough call needs to be taken,” a BCCI source told PTI on Wednesday.

The BCCI Apex Council meeting on Thursday is expected to pave the way for the end of Suryakumar Yadav’s stint as India’s T20I captain. The selectors have decided to look beyond SKY, with the Council likely to approve the appointment of a new skipper. The change is expected to be formalised at the selection committee’s next meeting on June 6, when squads for the UK white-ball tour and the Asian Games are set to be chosen.

Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are leading the race to replace Suryakumar as India T20 captain. Coach Gambhir is expected to have the final say.

At 35, SKY is not getting any younger, plus his batting form is only going down. Before becoming a captain, Suryakumar scored 2040 runs in 58 matches, while he only amassed 1232 runs in 49 matches. In IPL 2026, he also scored only 270 runs in 13 innings. His poor form left selectors with no choice.
