‘Hindi aati hai’: Shoaib Bashir’s cheeky response to Sarfaraz Khan goes viral

Young England spinner Shoaib Bashir was named in the squad for the Test series against India having played in a handful of first-class matches. The 20-year-old's lack of experience did not matter much as Bashir emerged as a standout performer for England in the ongoing fourth Test in Ranchi. Bashir picked up his maiden five-wicket haul and troubled the Indian batting. When Bashir came out to bat, a short exchange of words, between him and Sarfaraz Khan took place. His playful exchange with Sarfaraz added a touch of humour to the intense match. The Indian batter passed a remark on Bashir's Hindi-speaking skills to Ravindra Jadeja, saying, 'Arey yaar, ise Hindi bhi nahi aati hai badhiya, [Guys, he doesn't know Hindi].”

In response, Bashir cheekily said, “Aati hai thodi thodi, [I know Hindi a little bit]”, eliciting a grin from Jadeja.

At the end of Day 3, India were at 40 for no loss in their chase of 192 runs. Although the hosts look favorites to chase this total down, the English spinner exuded confidence. "I know I have a job to do [on Day 4] and me and Tom [Hartley] are really excited for the challenge," Bashir said after the third day's play in Ranchi. "We know us two lads are up against a world-class team but we've got a chance to be heroes,” he added.

Bashir also mentioned that the pitch in Ranchi was showing signs of significant deterioration and there was uneven bounce and turn. He said that owing to this unpredictable nature of the pitch, various results were possible. Reflecting on how Ashwin and Jadeja utilized similar conditions to their advantage, Bashir was confident of getting the job done.

India, after a solid start, lost three quick wickets to the England spinners in the second innings. Joe Root accounted for India opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. India’s opening partnership looked solid but Root earned a much-needed breakthrough for the visitors. Later, Tom Hartley picked up the wicket of India skipper Rohit Sharma and Shoaib Bashir got rid of Rajat Patidar. Rohit returned to the dressing room scoring a fine half century.
