Shreyas Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav as India T20 captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns maiden call-up

Shreyas Iyer has been officially unveiled as the new T20 captain of India as Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped from the team. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also been included in the Indian team for the tour to England and Ireland.

Shreyas Iyer has replaced Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of the India T20I side while star teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned his maiden call-up to the Indian team following an outstanding performance in the Indian Premier League 2026. Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped from the team.

The developments were revealed by the BCCI selection committee on Saturday during the squad announcement for the tours to England and Ireland and the Asian Games 2026 in Japan.

Tilak Varma has been handed the vice captaincy of the team while Hardik Pandya has been rested with the all-rounder being prioritised for the 50-over World Cup next year. Jasprit Bumrah will not go to Ireland and England but has been selected for the Asian Games. Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav have also been dropped while Prince Yadav has been included for the series in England and Ireland. Ravi Bishnoi has also made a comeback to the teams for all three tours.

India begin their tour of the United Kingdom with a two-match T20I series in Belfast, Northern Ireland that takes place on 26 and 28 June. This will be India's first T20 assignment since winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year. The reigning T20 world champion then play five T20Is from 1 to 11 July followed by three ODIs.

The Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan take place in September and features cricket, which will be clashing with the multi-format series against West Indies at home. Meanwhile, the injured Virat Kohli has been replaced by Yashasvi Jaiswal for the ODIs against Afghanistan that take place later this month,
