Shreyas Iyer intends to leave Ireland horror behind, start 'new chapter' against England: 'It was depressing'

India T20 captain Shreyas Iyer intends to leave the Ireland nightmare behind and make a fresh start in the upcoming T20 series against England, with the first T20 match taking place on Wednesday in Durham.

The Men in Blue are reeling from a historic defeat, as Ireland sealed a 2-0 series sweep in Belfast last Sunday. Led by Lorcan Tucker, the Irish side delivered a standout all-around performance, putting India under relentless pressure and etching their name into history at the Civil Service Cricket Club Ground in Stormont.

Iyer looking forward to an 'intense series' against ENG

Speaking to the reporters on the eve of the 1st IND vs ENG T20I, Iyer acknowledged that the team has an idea of the surface and dimensions and looks forward to a competitive series against England in T20 cricket.

“This is a completely new chapter for us coming in here. A couple of us have played in England before, and we know the conditions, the ideas, and the dimensions over here. So, looking forward to an intense and challenging series this one,” Iyer said.

Iyer: 'Everyone in a good mindset'

The new India T20 skipper went on to say that after the previous series did not go as planned, the players are in a good mindset ahead of the upcoming series against the Harry Brook-led England. Iyer emphasised the importance of staying calm under pressure, noting that it would greatly benefit the team.

“Great opportunity, it's going to be challenging. Definitely, the last series didn't go according to our plan. But in this series, everyone is in a good mindset, and we are definitely looking forward to an intense game, with a great mindset within the group. So, the calmer we are in a pressure situation, the more beneficial it's going to be for us,” Iyer added.

The India tour of England kicks off on July 1, 2026, with the first T20 international match taking place at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, Durham County. The fixture starts at 10:00 PM IST.
