Rohit Sharma breaks 37-year-old record of 1983 World Cup winner in India vs Afghanistan 1st ODI

Rohit Sharma broke a long-standing record for India even before he came on to bat in the 1st India vs Afghanistan ODI in Dharamsala.

Rohit Sharma became the oldest man ever to play for India in ODIs when he took field in the 1st one-dayer between India and Afghanistan at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday, June 13.

The 39-year-old was doubtful for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan and was included subject to his fitness. However, he seems to have sidelined all the concerns regarding his fitness and thus was included in the line-up by captain Shubman Gill.

Rohit breaks Amarnath's record

On the day of the 1st ODI between Afghanistan and India, Rohit was 39 years and 44 days old, which made him the oldest man to play ODI cricket for India. Earlier, this record belonged to legendary batter Mohinder Amarnath. Part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, Amarnath last played ODI cricket for India when he was 39 years and 36 days old. He played his final 50-over match for India in October 1989 against the West Indies.

After a long rain delay, the ODI series finally began in Dharamsala but the match was truncated to 25 overs per side. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field with left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey and right-arm fast bowler Gurnoor Brar being handed their ODI debuts.
