RCB's transformation decoded: How 2025 auction and this one bold step helped Bengaluru establish an IPL dynasty

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans have seen it all. They witnessed a star-studded side in the early days of IPL fall agonisingly short in the finals of 2009 and 2011. Then came the Chris Gayle era, where individual brilliance could not translate into team success. In 2016, the season still remembered for Virat Kohli's 973 runs, the title felt closer than ever, until it slipped away in the final moments. More heartbreak followed.

The next few years were even more painful, with two wooden spoon finishes in 2017 and 2019. A gradual turnaround began from 2020, when they started making playoffs regularly but something was still missing. That missing piece finally fell into place in 2025.

RCB's mega Auction masterclass

RCB made a bold and calculated decision ahead of the 2025 mega auction. They retained only three players, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and uncapped pacer Yash Dayal. With serial franchise league-winning coach Andy Flower at the helm and a healthy purse, they executed one of the smartest auctions in IPL history.

Instead of splurging on big names, RCB built a balanced squad. Their most expensive buy was Josh Hazlewood for Rs 12.50 crore, which is almost half of the third-costliest buy of that auction. They smartly filled every department. Firepower came through Tim David and Phil Salt, stability through Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, and finishing ability through Jitesh Sharma.

A strong pace attack led by Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, along with quality all-rounders like Krunal Pandya, completed the jigsaw.

The bench too had enough quality with Romario Shephered, Jacob Bethell and Lungi Ngidi contributing whenever needed.

The real difference

RCB were known to be a team where even big-ticket stars would falter. Legends like Shane Watson, Yuvraj Singh, Brendon McCullum and many others were far from their best when they played for RCB. However, for the last two seasons, they have completely turned this thing around as well.

Like prime CSK under MS Dhoni, what truly set RCB apart was how the management extracted the best out of every player.

Krunal Pandya, once seen as a useful part-timer, became a dependable four-over bowler, a clutch batter and a complete match-winner. Devdutt Padikkal, once seen as too slow in the format, transformed into an aggressive No.3, dramatically improving his strike rate. Bhuvneshwar Kumar rediscovered his old magic and almost won the Purple Cap. Even Venkatesh Iyer, who was discarded by KKR due to poor form last season, delivered for RCB.

RCB's biggest gamble

Despite consistent playoff appearances under Faf du Plessis' captaincy, RCB decided to release him ahead of the 2025 season. Reports suggested the franchise wanted Virat Kohli to take back the reins. That would have been an easier decision and a widely popular one.

However, RCB trusted Rajat Patidar to lead the side. The Madhya Pradesh batter was with the team in 2021 and was then released before being picked up as a replacement next season. In the Eliminator of that season, he scored a stunning century, and this is where his life changed and probably RCB's too.

Despite him not being an India regular or even close to the Indian team, RCB handed him the big burden of captaincy and the hard-hitting batter has now led the team to two straight titles.

His performance with the bat has kept improving and his decisions on the field have brought out results like it is a dream.

Legends like Anil Kumble, Kohli, Du Plessis struggled to give this team even a single title and a certain Rajat Patidar has now given them two. RCB fans have now really seen it all. The drought is gone and it is raining titles.
