Why MS Dhoni is missing CSK's match vs Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad in IPL 2026?

MS Dhoni will not be part of Chennai Super Kings’ crucial IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Thursday, with the former captain currently back in Ranchi after suffering a thumb injury.

CSK batting coach Mike Hussey has confirmed that Dhoni is now carrying a thumb issue and is expected to rejoin the squad only if the team manages to qualify for the playoffs, which is highly unlikely with just one top-4 spot remaining and Chennai sitting at the bottom of the eligible contenders' list.

Even if CSK manage to beat GT tonight, they will not be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, as they will still need other results to go in their favour, especially those involving Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals.

Dhoni had already been unavailable for most of the IPL 2026 season because of a calf injury, from which he is believed to have recovered. However, the thumb problem has now ruled him out again. This is also the first time in IPL history that Dhoni has not featured in a single match in an entire season.

Meanwhile, there have been growing rumours about a possible rift in the relationship between Dhoni and the CSK management. While nothing has been officially confirmed, a CricBlogger report recently suggested that differences had been building over the last couple of seasons, especially over major decisions.

According to the report, Dhoni was not fully convinced with some of the franchise’s recent calls, including decision to trade Ravindra Jadeja to RR and bring in Sanju Samson. It has also been claimed that Dhoni will not return in CSK colours next season if he decides to continue his IPL playing career.
