Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has landed in trouble after reportedly testing positive for recreational drug use, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo. Nawaz, who has represented Pakistan in all three formats, went through an anti-doping process under the International Cricket Council (ICC) and sent positive results.

A spokesperson from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that they have been informed about the matter and have started an investigation. The board also said that the findings of their process will be shared with the ICC soon. As per the report, the positive test result is believed to have come from testing conducted during the 2026 T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Nawaz's county cricket deal called off

Meanwhile, the development has also affected his planned stint in England, as his deal to join Surrey County Cricket Club in the summer has now been called off. Nawaz had agreed to play for Surrey in the upcoming T20 Blast, which is scheduled to run from May 26 to July 18. The PCB had even granted him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) recently. However, the deal has now been cancelled, and the English county has chosen not to comment on the matter.

Despite the controversy, Nawaz continues to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he is representing Multan Sultans. He played a game against Rawalpindiz just last night in PSL 2026, but failed to make any impact in his team's win. Overall, he has picked up six wickets from eight matches so far in the league and has scored 36 runs at a dismal strike rate of 105.

In the T20 World Cup 2026, where Nawaz played in all seven matches for Pakistan up until the Super Eight Stage, he scored 15 runs and took seven wickets. Pakistan failed to qualify for the knockouts yet again due to an inferior net run rate. He was also part of the Asia Cup 2025 team that lost the final to India.
