Jay Shah extends support to teams ahead of 'landmark' Women's T20 World Cup: 'ICC commited to build more inclusive, global game'

Jay Shah, chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), expressed his support for all the participating teams in the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in the UK.

Shah described the upcoming women's cricketing showpiece as the biggest edition in the tournament's history and said the tournament's upcoming edition is designed to elevate anticipation and buzz before the event kicks off.

Speaking at the tournament's launch event, the ICC chairperson emphasised that the upcoming women's T20 World Cup is a landmark moment for women's cricket and described it as the most ambitious and exciting ever staged. Shah added that the event highlights ICC's broader commitment to developing a more inclusive and global game.

The ICC kingpin also highlighted its importance not just as a competition but as a step forward for women’s cricket worldwide.

“This is a landmark moment for women’s Cricket and a fitting way to launch what we believe will be the most exciting and ambitious ICC Women’s T20 World Cup ever staged. This will help elevate the buzz and excitement around the event, providing the final boost to the anticipation for the tournament before the first ball is bowled on June 12 in Birmingham. This event is another expression of the ICC’s commitment and belief linked to the agenda of building a more inclusive, global game,” Jay Shah said.

Women's T20 World Cup all set to kick off

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup was launched on Sunday at London's famous Waterloo Bridge, with the captains of all participating teams coming together. They took part in activities such as street cricket and played interactive games during the ceremony.

New Zealand would be defending the title this year after winning in 2024. The White Ferns defeated South Africa Women by 32 runs in the summit clash to lift the coveted silverware.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian cricket team, which won the women's Cricket World Cup in 2025, would aim for its maiden T20 crown. The Women in Blue kick off their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.
