Why Pant-Kuldeep trade was announced so quickly after IPL 2026 season? The rule change explained
The blockbuster Rishabh Pant-Kuldeep Yadav swap surprised many IPL fans, with the deal being announced just days after the end of the 2026 season. Here's a small rule change that allowed IPL transfer window to begin early.

The blockbuster swap involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav has sparked plenty of excitement, but it has also left many IPL fans confused. How was such a major trade completed and announced so quickly after the end of IPL 2026?
The answer lies in a key change to the IPL's trading window rules.
Traditionally, IPL franchises had to wait for the trading window to open one month after the conclusion of a season. The window would then remain active until a week before the next auction, before reopening again after the auction. This system often meant teams had to wait several weeks before officially completing deals.
IPL's little-known rule tweak explained
However, ahead of the 2027 season, the IPL reportedly informed franchises of a revised regulation that significantly accelerated the process.
The updated rule stated that player trading for the 2027 season would be permitted from 9:00 am (IST) on the day falling seven days after the end of IPL 2026, reported The Hindu's Amol Karhadkar.
In simple terms, franchises no longer had to wait an entire month before beginning business. Instead, the transfer market effectively opened just a week after the season ended.
That change explains how the Pant-Kuldeep deal could be formally processed and announced so early.
So how exactly does IPL trading work?
Unlike a traditional auction, trades take place directly between franchises. A team can either exchange one player for another or acquire a player through an all-cash deal, subject to approval from the IPL and the player's existing contractual obligations.
Crucially, a player cannot simply decide to switch teams on his own. The involved franchises must agree to the terms of the trade, and the transaction must comply with IPL regulations and salary-cap requirements.
It has also been reported that Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya is being chased by two former champions. And if that deal goes through, we may soon hear about another blockbuster transfer deal.
