What PBKS need to qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs and how KKR can still surpass them even if RR lose to MI
Punjab Kings are on the brink of IPL 2026 playoff qualification after a win over LSG, but their fate now depends on RR vs MI. Here’s how PBKS can qualify and how KKR still have an outside chance to make it to the last four.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive after a crucial win over Lucknow Super Giants, led by a brilliant unbeaten century from skipper Shreyas Iyer. The victory took them to 15 points from 14 matches and back into the top four, but their qualification is still not guaranteed.
The situation is now completely dependent on the result of the Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians clash. PBKS are in the top-4 right now, but they are in an uncertain position, with multiple scenarios still in play.
What PBKS need to qualify
If Rajasthan Royals beat Mumbai Indians, PBKS will be eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race immediately. It will also mean that KKR, which is currently on 13 points, will also be knocked out regardless of their result against Delhi Capitals.
However, if MI beat RR, the door will remain open for both PBKS and KKR. If RR lose to MI, PBKS will stay on 15 points, and KKR will also have an outside chance to surpass them, but only if they improve their Net Run Rate (NRR) significantly.
For that to happen, KKR must beat DC and move level on 15 points with PBKS. Then KKR must massively improve their NRR compared to PBKS (+0.309 vs +0.011) If KKR bat first, they need to win by 77-plus runs after scoring 200. If KKR chase, they need to reach the target in around 12-12.4 overs.
If KKR fail to achieve this, assuming that RR lose to MI tomorrow afternoon, PBKS will go through to playoffs. However, if RR beat MI in the afternoon game, they will qualify and the evening match between KKR and DC will be rendered meaningless.
