IPL records broken in 2026 season: From Sooryavanshi hitting most sixes to highest successful chase

The 19th season of the Indian Premier League turned out to be a historic affair with multiple records being broken along the way. The season delivered peak batting dominance, with bowlers also displaying their class with standout spells, and concluded with Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully defending their title after defeating Gujarat Titans in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, 31 May.

With the curtain finally drawing on IPL 2026, we take a look at some of the records broken and milestones achieved this season in greater detail below:

Sooryavanshi headlines IPL 2026, smashes multiple records

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, in particular, delivered a record-breaking season with his aggressive batting. The 15-year-old set new benchmarks in top-order run-scoring, strike rate and six-hitting.

Veteran batter KL Rahul also showed poise with standout knocks this season, breaking a major record in the process.

Vaibhav broke many records, which include:

– First teenager to score 700+ runs in a single IPL season, scoring 776 runs.

– Hits the most sixes in a season (72), surpassing Chris Gayle’s 59 in 2012.

– Equalled Suresh Raina’s record for the fastest fifty in an IPL playoff (16 balls).

– Hits the most sixes in a playoff innings: 12 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, breaking Shubman Gill’s previous record of 10  in 2023.

– Sets new IPL record for the Highest Powerplay runs in a season: 500+ runs.

– First uncapped player to cross 600+ runs in a season.

Other batting records include:

– Highest successful run-chase in IPL history, with Punjab Kings breaking their own record set against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 by chasing down a target of 265 against Delhi Capitals.

– The same match in New Delhi last month also witnessed KL Rahul scoring an unbeaten 152 off 67 balls, the highest individual score by an Indian in the IPL.

– Teams posted 200-plus totals 61 times this season, going past the previous record of 52 last year.

– IPL 2026 also witnessed the most fours and sixes being hit in a single season – 2,332 and 1,426 respectively.

– The season also witnessed the highest average first innings total ever at 192.04, surpassing the previous record of 191.58 set just last year.

– IPL 2026 is the first season in which each team had at least one batter scoring a century.

Rabada, Narine standout among bowlers in batter-dominated season

In terms of bowling, Kagiso Rabada was immensely successful throughout the season, while veteran Sunil Narine also etched records. Young bowlers like Anshul Kamboj and Eshan Malinga made headlines with their breakthrough performances this season.

– Kagiso Rabada joined an elite list of bowlers winning the Purple Cap more than once after finishing as the highest-wicket taker in IPL 2026 with 29 wickets, having previous achieved the feat in 2020. The GT pacer went level with Dwayne Bravo (2013 and 2015), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016 and 2017) and Harshal Patel (2021 and 2024).

– Veteran KKR spin-bowling all-rounder Sunil Narine became the first overseas bowler in IPL history to breach the 200-wicket mark. The West Indian off-spinner currently has 207 wickets to his name and is the third-highest wicket-taker overall in the IPL.
