India Women's T20 World Cup semifinal qualification scenarios explained after big loss to South Africa
Can India still qualify for the Women's T20 World Cup semifinal after the loss to South Africa? Check out the scenarios for the Women in Blue after the defeat.

India were outplayed by South Africa in the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 to suffer their first loss of the campaign on Sunday at the Old Trafford in Manchester. Despite this being the first loss of Harmanpreet Kaur and Co at this edition, the result has already put the team in trouble with respect to their chances of advancing to the next round.
India laboured to a below-par 158-7 in 20 overs after choosing to bat first. No Indian batter could make a big score and only Shafali Verma (31) crossed the 30-run mark.
In reply, Marizanne Kapp, who had taken a couple of wickets with the ball, starred with the bat as well and smashed 81 not out to push the Proteas over the line with five balls in hand and six wickets in store.
The loss puts India in a precarious position in Group A and could be decisive in the race to the semifinals. Below we take a look at what India need to do to qualify for the semifinals.
India semifinal qualification scenario
The top two teams from both groups will advance to the semifinals. From Group A, two teams, Pakistan and the Netherlands, have already been eliminated. The race for the top two spots is thus between the remaining four.
Gourp A table
| Pos | Team | P | W | L | NR | Pts | NRR |
| 1 | AUSW | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 6 | 4.391 |
| 2 | INDW | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 2.511 |
| 3 | RSAW | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 4 | -0.546 |
| 4 | BANW | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 4 | -0.641 |
| 5 | PAKW (E) | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | -1.857 |
| 6 | NEDW (E) | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | -3.384 |
Currently, India are tied with South Africa and Bangladesh on four points while Australia are leading the group with six points in three matches. With Australia being the strongest team, they are most likely to take one of these spots, leaving only one for the other three competitors.
India need to win both their remaining matches to keep their qualification chances alive. Apart from winning their own matches, they will also need help from Bangladesh or the Netherlands. If any of these two teams defeat South Africa, then India can qualify for the next round with two wins.
However, if South Africa also win their remaining two matches, then India must definitely win their matches and keep their net run rate above the Proteas.
What makes this equation tricky is that India will face the mighty Australians in their last group game. So, India might have to beat the heavyweights, Australia, to qualify for the next round.
If India lose any of their remaining games, then they would have to hope for a lot of other results to go their way to qualify. If India lose both, they will be knocked out in all likelihood.
