Deepti Sharma was deservedly named Player of the Match after delivering a brilliant five-wicket haul. The all-rounder anchored India’s bowling attack with precision and control, leaving Pakistan’s batters with no answers to her dominance.

Deepti operated with utter brilliance in the 16th over, claiming a five-wicket haul in the Women’s T20 World Cup group-stage opener!

She claimed the final wicket of Nashra Sandhu, with Harmanpreet completing the catch at mid-wicket.

India sealed a commanding 64-run victory over Pakistan, sparking jubilant celebrations in the Indian camp.

Shafali concedes 12 in her third over, including a boundary to Aliya – the first for Pakistan in more than six overs – in the penultimate delivery. Pakistan need another 67 to win off 24 balls with just three wickets in hand – improbable, but not entirely impossible! PAK 104/7 in 16

Rameen Shamim becomes the latest Pakistani batter to get the marching orders, departing for 4 after getting a thick outside edge with Shreyanka pulling off a blinder at backward point. PAK 91/7 after 14.4; target: 171

The Indians decide to review after the on-field umpire rules it not out in the fourth delivery. The bat is in close proximity to the ball at the time of the latter crashing into Aliya’s pad, and it’s not conclusive enough for the TV umpire to overturn her on-field colleague’s original decision. Tidy over from Shafali with six coming off it – none of them through boundaries. PAK 89/6 in 14; need 82 off 36

Natalia’s dismissal is a near-replay of that of Fatima – getting caught inside the circle while attempting a lofted drive off spin. Except Natalia falls to left-arm spin, offering a catch at extra cover. Unless Aliya is able to pull off a miracle from here, India should leave the venue with a win against their name later today. Fatima Sana goes for an aerial drive in the third delivery of Shafali Verma’s first over, but barely clears Smriti Mandhana standing at cover. All it takes is a well-timed jump for Mandhana to complete an easy catch. The Pakistani skipper departs for a three-ball duck! Pakistan crumble to 77/5 in the 12th over from 52/1 at the end of the powerplay! 

After bowling three superb overs, Deepti Sharma’s making quite the impact on the field as well as she runs Muneeba out with a direct hit at the striker’s end! Muneeba had made it in the nick of time at the striker’s end in the previous over, but her luck finally runs out after the halfway stage. PAK 75/4 in 10.5; need 96 off 55

10 off Shree Charani’s second over, including a boundary to Muneeba in the fourth delivery – the first for the Pakistanis since the conclusion of the powerplay – as she sweeps hard towards square leg. 10 The senior opener narrowly avoids getting run-out in the second ball of the over after responding to Natalia’s call for a risky single. Deepti Sharma appeals loudly for LBW against Natalia Pervaiz, who misses the ball while attempting a sweep. The star all-rounder successfully convinces captain Harmanpreet to review, and it turns out to be a case of ‘Umpire’s Call’ – allowing the batter to continue. Another tidy over from Deepti, with just three singles coming off it. Pakistan suddenly under immense pressure. PAK 62/3 in 9; target: 171

Pakistan are starting to lose wickets in quick succession now, with Saira Jabeen departing for 2 after getting a leading edge off Shree Charani’s bowling that results in a simple catch for Harmanpreet at short cover. PAK 58/3 in 7.4; target: 171

Ayesha Zafar departs for 12 off 8 after sweeping the ball towards short fine, where Smriti Mandhana lunges forward to complete a fine catch inside the circle. Deepti’s making all the difference with the ball at the moment, striking immediately after the drinks break after the conclusion of the powerplay. PAK 53/2 in 6.3; target: 171

Arundhati Reddy continues to bleed runs, with new batter Ayesha Zafar collecting back-to-back boundaries – guiding the ball over midwicket in the second delivery and placing the ball wide of backward point in the following delivery. Pakistan collect 14 runs more than what India managed during the same period, while losing a wicket less. They need another 119 to win from 84 balls with nine wickets in hand.

Gull Feroza goes for a reverse sweep, but hits the ball straight to Bharti Fulmali at backward point! Deepti was building pressure in her first over, starting with three dots and conceding a single in the fourth. Feroza attempted to break the shackles and paid the price as a result. Shreyanka’s off to an expensive start in her second over, with Gull and Muneeba collecting a boundary each. Muneeba gets another reprieve, with Arundhati unable to hold on to the ball near cover point after a mishit by the veteran Pakistani opener. 12 from the off-spinner’s second over. Gaud starts with a 14-run over, conceding three boundaries with Muneeba – who had been dropped in the previous over – collecting two of them. Muneeba plays the ball over short fine at the start of the over and pulls the ball towards long leg four balls later. Gull Feroza helps herself to one in the third delivery, cutting a short, wide delivery through backward point. PAK 25/0 in 3; target: 171

Muneeba Ali gets a reprieve on 6 after getting an outside edge in the second delivery of Shreyanka Patil’s first over. Ghosh got a bit of glove on it but couldn’t complete the catch. Off-spinner Shreyanka, however, begins her spell on a tidy note, with just three runs being added to the Pakistani total. PAK 11/0 after 2; target: 171

Muneeba cuts a short-of-length ball over short third for a four in the first delivery. Reddy concedes four in the remaining deliveries, including a wide in the final delivery. PAK 8/0 after 1; target: 171

Pakistan haven’t chased anything more than 156 in women’s T20Is till date, and have been set 171 to win by arch-rivals India at Edgbaston in the ongoing match.

Additionally, 164 is the the highest target successfully chased at the Women’s T20 World Cup, achieved by England nearly two decades ago.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana bowls the final over, and ends up conceding 15 – many of them coming in the form of extras including five wides in the fourth delivery. The seamer does castle Richa in the penultimate ball, but the damage is already done by then. A wide and a single added to India’s total after her dismissal. Superb fightback by the Indian team after getting reduced to 18/2 in the powerplay. At one point it looked as if they would struggle to cross 140. However, the third-wicket stand between Smriti and Harman and Richa’s fireworks in the death over allow India to finish within touching distance of 180! IND 170/6 in 20

Richa is castled after missing the ball completely in the penultimate delivery of the Indian innings. But she has done her part in steering India past 160 with a flurry of boundaries in the death overs, including one in the final over in which she sweeps a slower ball behind square. Deepti shifts to her left and guides the ball over short fine for a four. Richa accelerates later in the over, collecting three fours and a six – all of them in consecutive deliveries. Lofts the ball over mid off for a four before clearing the leaping fielder at long on for a six next ball. Gets a thick outside edge that lands beyond short fine in the penultimate delivery, bringing up the 150 for India. Richa ends the over on a high, pulling a short-of-length ball towards wide long on for a four. Massive over for the Women in Blue, with 23 coming off it. IND 155/5 in 19

The Women in Blue have not collected a boundary for more than three overs now, with the two batters at the centre under pressure after a flurry of wickets. Just 10 runs in the last two overs, with Nashra signing off with figures of 0/25 from four after conceding three in her final over. IND 132/5 in 18

Captain gets captain as Harmanpreet (36 off 35) is dismissed by Fatima at the start of the 17th over, holing out to Natalia Pervaiz who is stationed at the edge of the backward square leg fence. IND 123/5 in 16.2

Nashra Sandhu returns to the attack in the 16th over, and concedes five in her third over including a couple of doubles. Harmanpreet’s batting on 36 off 34 balls and will be hoping to bat till the end of the innings, hoping to get her team past 160.

Ghosh gets a short ball outside off first up, and responds with a firm cut that sends the ball racing away to the fence. Seven from the over, with Sadia Iqbal signing off with figures of 2/41. IND 117/4 in 15

Bharti Fulmani pays the price for a rash shot early in her innings, missing the ball completely after skipping halfway down the track, resulting in an easy stumping. Second wicket for Sadia Iqbal, who is bowling out her final over. IND 110/4 in 14.2

Mandhana departs shortly after a mandatory concussion check, which might have disrupted her momentum a bit. She collects a boundary off Rameen immediately after the concussion check, but is caught superbly by Fatima at long on while attempting to collect back-to-back fours.
