India post highest total in T20 World Cup final history: What is the highest successful chase?

The final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 witnessed history as India posted the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.

India smashed 255/5 in the summit clash, setting a new record for the biggest total in a T20 World Cup final. The previous record belonged to India as well, when they scored 176/7 against South Africa in the 2024 final at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Before that, the highest total in a T20 World Cup final was 172/4, scored by New Zealand against Australia in the 2021 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Highest successful chase in a T20 World Cup final

The record for the highest successful run chase in a T20 World Cup final still belongs to Australia. In the 2021 final, Australia chased down 173 runs against New Zealand, finishing at 173/2 in Dubai to win their maiden T20 World Cup title. It remains the biggest successful chase in the history of T20 World Cup finals.

India dominate with big totals in finals

Interestingly, India are the only team to score 150 or more runs three times in T20 World Cup finals. In this tournament, India have crossed the 250-run mark three times, which is the most by any team. Their 253/7 against England in the semi-final on Thursday was the previous highest total in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma played a key role in helping India post 255 in the final with their record-breaking fifties. Ishan Kishan also smashed a quickfire half-century as India crossed the 200-run mark in 15 overs. Shivam Dube demolished Jimmy Neesham in the final over to get his team to the 250-run milestone.
