Gambhir Gambhir wants contract till 2028 T20 World Cup, keeps faith in SKY as captain: Report
Gautam Gambhir is reportedly eyeing a contract extension till the 2028 T20 World Cup and is backing Suryakumar Yadav as India’s captain despite concerns over his recent form.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir is reportedly keen on extending his tenure till the 2028 T20 World Cup, and Suryakumar Yadav continues to remain his first-choice captain in the shortest format. Over the past few months, concerns regarding SKY's form in T20 cricket have grown, but Gambhir still believes in him and wants him to lead the side until the next T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar Yadav recently led India to a T20 World Cup triumph, but his batting form has not been great. The 35-year-old scored 242 runs in the tournament, with his best performance coming in the opening match against USA, where he played an unbeaten knock of 84. However, after that game, he struggled to maintain consistency and failed to deliver big scores in crucial matches.
His poor run has continued in the ongoing (Indian Premier League) IPL 2026 season as well, where he has managed just 106 runs in four matches so far for Mumbai Indians, with a highest score of 51 against Delhi Capitals.
SKY to remain captain till 2028?
According to a PTI report, India’s upcoming tour of England and Ireland will be extremely important for Suryakumar Yadav. The performances in these series could decide whether he remains in the leadership role till the 2028 T20 World Cup and even the Los Angeles Olympics, where he has already expressed his desire to lead India.
"Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.
Despite the concerns, Gambhir is backing SKY. The report states that the head coach is expecting his own contract to be extended till the 2028 T20 World Cup and wants SKY to remain the captain. Gambhir's current contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
