T20 World Cup match-fixing scandal: What 'suspicious' things Canada Captain Dilpreet Bajwa is said to have done

Dilpreet Bajwa is facing scrutiny as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has opened an investigation into Canada’s T20 World Cup match against New Zealand that took place on February 17 in Chennai.

New Zealand beat Canada with ease in that group stage match but shocking details are now emerging about potential corruption by Bajwa who was the captain of the Canadian cricket team at the tournament.

The accusations against Bajwa form part of the broader allegations against Cricket Canada highlighted in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary “Corruption, Crime and Cricket,” aired on April 17, 2026.

Which actions of Bajwa are under suspicion?

The main focus of the investigation currently is the fifth over of New Zealand’s innings which was bowled by Bajwa. Chasing 174, New Zealand were at 35 for 2 when Bajwa decided to bowl himself. Primarly a batter, Bajwa's decision to bowl did not go right as he conceded 15 runs in total.

However, the manner in which he conceded them is now under scrutiny. He bowled a no-ball on his very first ball and delivered a wide down the leg side on the third ball. This over is currently being probed by the ACU.

While the fifth over is the main focus of investigation, there are other issues that are raising further suspicion over Canada captain's conduct. The 43-minute documentary makes allegations of outside influence on selection calls and the fact that Bajwa was made the captain of the side just weeks before the tournament is raising doubts.

Bajwa's slow batting approach against New Zealand is also being seen as unusual. In a 116-run opening partnership with Yuvraj Samra, Bajwa scored 36 runs but took 39 balls for it. His pace of scoring and a misfield has also raised concerns of being compromised.

However, credible reports so far have only confirmed his fifth over to be under investigation with all others mere speculations.

Under Bajwa's captaincy, Canada could not win any of their four group matches and were knocked out early in the tournament. The captain himself scored only 60 runs in four innings and picked up only a solitary wicket in 10 overs.
