MS Dhoni once again emerges as highest taxpayer in Bihar, Jharkhand despite playing only IPL

Former India captain MS Dhoni has once again been revealed to be the highest individual taxpayer in the states of Bihar and Jharkhand. The Ranchi-born star has consistently been the highest taxpayer from the two states for past many years.

Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 and has only appeared for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since then. However, he still remains a fan favourite and is a regular face in advertisements.

Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Bihar -Jharkhand), Dr D Sudhakara Rao revealed the information to media on Thursday.

Rao said, "M S Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer combining Bihar and Jharkhand during the previous financial year." He, however, refrained from disclosing his net tax return.

Rao also disclosed that in total Rs 20000 crore was collected in taxes from Bihar and Jharkhand during the last financial year with the bulk of it coming from Jharkhand.

"The total collection from Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial year of 2025-26 was around Rs 20,000 crore, of which Rs 12,000 crore was collected only from Jharkhand,"

Around 70 per cent of the total collection received through tax deduction at source (TDS), he said.

"During the previous financial year, the mining activity was a bit affected due to heavy rains, which impacted the collection. We hope to exceed the Rs 20,000 crore mark in tax collection during the current financial year," Rao said.

Dhoni's consistency

Dhoni is usually at the top of the individual taxpayers list when it is revealed. In 2022-23, two years after his retirement from international cricket, the former India skipper paid a total of Rs 38 crore as advance tax to the I-T Department.

This time, the figure has not been revealed, leaving fans to speculate how much further has it increased even five years after his retirement. He is still a regular face on advertisements and also has investments in several ventures.

Dhoni is currently recovering from an injury and is yet to play a game at the ongoing IPL 2026.
