Deepti Sharma moves past Jhulan Goswami to create women's international cricket history

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has become the highest wicket-taker in women's international cricket leaving former India great Jhulan Goswami behind. Deepti achieved the feat during India vs Australia clash at the Women's T20 World Cup 2026.

Deepti's wicket of Beth Mooney in the 10th over of Australia's innings was her 356th scalp in international cricket, one more than Goswami who finished her career with 355 wickets. Mooney mishit a slog sweep and was caught by Radha Yadav at long-on, helping Deepti break the all-time record.

Mooney's wicket remained Deepti's only scalp in the game and a lacklustre performance from Indian bowlers saw Australia win the game and knock the Women in Blue out of the competition.

India, riding on a fine 56 from Harmanpreet Kaur, made 170 for 4 in the allotted 20 overs with Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma also chipping in with 38 and 34 respectively. Jemimah Rodrigues also got a 30 before retiring out.

However, Australia scored the required runs in 19 overs with Ellyse Perry (56) and Ashleigh Gardner (53 not out) being the main architects of the win. Sree Charani once again was the pick of the Indian bowlers as the left-arm spinner picked up a couple of wickets for 32 runs in her four overs. Deepti got only one wicket but gave only 31 runs. Shafali Verma too bowled a tight spell but others could not keep the pressure up and Australia reached the target with ease.

With South Africa defeating Bangladesh by four wickets earlier in the day, Australia and the Proteas moved into the semifinals from Group A.

Australia finished their group engagements with 10 points, followed by South Africa on eight from five. India finished with six points to get eliminated from the group stage for the second successive edition at the Women's T20 World Cup.
