'Rohit Sharma has become lean, but BCCI is worried about his body': Report

Rohit Sharma may have shed a lot of weight, but his leaner looks have not allayed the fears that he may not have the required fitness for 50-over matches. According to a report in Times of India, the BCCI is unsure whether the former India captain can take the toll of ODI cricket.

Rohit has been picked in the India ODI squad for a three-match series against Afghanistan, but his selection is subject to a fitness Test. The 39-year-old has missed multiple matches for his IPL side Mumbai Indians, in the 2026 season due to a hamstring issue.

BCCI worried about Rohit's fitness

A BCCI source has told TOI that the selectors are worried that Rohit, who is nearing 40, may not have the fitness required to field for 50 overs as India look to build their squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Rohit didn't report to the BCCI's centre of excellence (CoE) for those three weeks. He has become lean, but there are concerns about his body being able to take the load of high-performance sport. He has to field for 50 overs. ODI cricket doesn't have the option of an Impact Player like IPL. Body takes time to heal when you are so close to turning 40,” a BCCI source said.

The BCCI selectors have reportedly also begun the plan to have back-up openers ready for the World Cup in case Rohit fails to make it to the squad.

“There aren't many ODIs before the World Cup. As it is (Yashasvi) Jaiswal hasn't got enough game time. Ishan has been picked so that he can double up as an opener. But if Rohit fails to make it to the World Cup and either Shubman Gill or Jaiswal gets injured, there needs to be another opener ready,” added the BCCI source.
