BCCI drops selection hint ahead of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-anticipated India debut: 'Start of something special'

The wait for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-anticipated India debut is getting closer as the 15-year-old batting sensation continues to make headlines ahead of the T20 series opener against Ireland. The match is scheduled to take place in Belfast and will start at 6:00 PM IST.

Just hours before what could be a memorable moment for the youngster, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added to the excitement by sharing a video of Sooryavanshi’s first training session with the Indian team. He was seen batting at the nets and preparing alongside India’s senior players.

BCCI’s post came with the caption: “Start of something special,” adding further excitement among fans who are eagerly waiting to see whether the teenager gets his first opportunity in Indian colours.

If Sooryavanshi takes the field against Ireland or during the upcoming England series, he will become the youngest player to represent India in men's international cricket, breaking the long-standing record held by legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days.

The teenager earned his maiden India call-up after a sensational IPL 2026 season, where he became the youngest-ever Orange Cap winner. He broke several records this years, including the one for hitting most sixes in an IPL season, surpassing Chris Gayle's long-standing record.

However, selecting him in the playing XI will not be an easy decision for new captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir. This is the same Indian team that won the T20 World Cup 2026 a few months back, and dropping someone from the playing XI would not be an easy decision.

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had earlier praised Sooryavanshi’s talent but said the youngster should not be included at the expense of a player who is already performing.

“Vaibhav is very talented, there is no doubt. And the way he has batted in IPL and all the other games, there is no need to tell that he has got a lot of natural abilities,” Kotak said.

“If he plays, great. If he doesn't play also for me, that is great because he is part of the Indian team. And I am sure that he will get his dues and his opportunities,” he added.

The youngster’s possible debut has created huge excitement among fans and experts, who are waiting eagerly to see whether India’s latest batting sensation can continue his dream run on the international stage.
