Why Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s AI speech wasn’t booed like other tech titans

Artificial intelligence is rapidly influencing workplaces, and commencement ceremonies across the United States have unexpectedly emerged as one of the clearest battlegrounds over the technology’s future.
In recent weeks, multiple graduation speeches celebrating AI have been interrupted by boos, jeers, and visible frustration from students preparing to enter an uncertain employment landscape.
Yet amid that growing backlash, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak managed to achieve something unusual. During his commencement address at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, Wozniak spoke about AI and received applause rather than outrage.
What Wozniak said
Wozniak’s remarks landed differently because instead of presenting AI as an unstoppable force demanding obedience, he framed human intelligence as something more valuable than software systems.
His message was interpreted by many graduates as reassurance during a period of economic uncertainty and technological disruption.
"You all have AI — actual intelligence," Wozniak told the graduating class, drawing cheers from the audience. "My entire life in the technical world, I’ve been following people who were trying to figure out how to make a brain."
"I was at a company where the engineers figured out how to make a brain," he continued. "It takes nine months."
The audience reaction sharply contrasted with what had unfolded at other universities during the 2026 graduation season.
How graduation ceremonies have become flashpoints in the AI debate
Over the past several months, graduation speeches mentioning AI have repeatedly triggered confrontations between speakers and students.
At University of Arizona, former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt faced persistent booing while discussing artificial intelligence during his commencement address. Schmidt spoke about AI’s transformative potential and encouraged graduates to embrace the technology, comparing the current moment to boarding a rocket ship.
“AI is going to touch everything,” Schmidt told students. “You can now assemble a team of AI agents to help you with the parts you could never accomplish on your own.”
He later added, “When someone offers you a seat on the rocket ship, you do not ask which seat, you just get on. Graduates, the rocket ship is here.”
However, many students appeared unconvinced by the message. Rather than interpreting the remarks as inspirational, some graduates viewed them as another warning that automation could reshape industries before they even begin their careers.
Schmidt himself acknowledged the uncertainty facing younger generations during the speech.
“There is a fear in your generation that the future has already been written, that the machines are coming, that the jobs are evaporating, that the climate is breaking, that politics are fractured, and that you are inheriting a mess that you did not create,” he said.
The reaction at the University of Arizona was not isolated.
At University of Central Florida, real estate executive Gloria Caulfield faced boos after referring to AI as “the next industrial revolution” while addressing graduates from the humanities department.
As students reacted loudly, Caulfield responded, “Okay, I struck a chord.”
Meanwhile, at Middle Tennessee State University, music executive Scott Borchetta received a similarly hostile response after discussing AI’s growing role in music production.
“AI is rewriting production as we sit here,” Borchetta told students, prompting boos from the audience. He then replied, “deal with it… Like I said, it's a tool. You can hear me now or pay me later.”
The Glendale Community College incident
One of the most widely discussed commencement controversies of the season occurred at Glendale Community College in Arizona, where a technical malfunction involving AI directly disrupted the graduation ceremony itself.
The college had implemented an AI-powered system to read aloud students’ names as graduates crossed the stage. Instead of streamlining the event, the technology reportedly skipped over and incorrectly pronounced hundreds of names.
The malfunction immediately frustrated students and family members attending the ceremony. As the problems unfolded, college president Tiffany Hernandez addressed the audience and explained that “We’re using a new AI system as our reader.”
Her remarks were met with boos from the crowd. “That is a lesson learned for us,” Hernandez added.
Why Wozniak’s remarks resonated with students
Rather than framing artificial intelligence as a replacement for human ability, the Apple co-founder emphasised the importance of human creativity, thought, and emotional intelligence.
His comments did not dismiss technological progress, but they avoided the triumphalist tone that has characterised many Silicon Valley discussions about AI.
By referring to graduates themselves as possessing “actual intelligence,” Wozniak effectively repositioned students — rather than machines — at the centre of the conversation.
The message carried additional weight because Wozniak has long been perceived as a figure distinct from many modern technology executives.
Although he helped establish Apple alongside Steve Jobs, Wozniak built a public image based more on engineering passion and creativity than corporate expansion or aggressive monetisation.
Over the years, he has frequently spoken about placing people ahead of technology itself. During a lecture series at Lehigh University in January earlier this year, Wozniak explained his philosophy clearly.
“I've always been for the human over the technology. As a human, you can solve things. That makes the human more important. If the technology is more important, the human has to learn all these different ways to do things to use the technology.”
Wozniak’s credibility with younger audiences has also been strengthened by his own openly cautious views regarding generative AI.
While many technology executives have enthusiastically promoted AI tools as revolutionary products, Wozniak has repeatedly questioned the quality and emotional depth of machine-generated content.
In a March interview with CNN, Wozniak admitted he rarely uses AI systems. “I don’t use AI much at all,” he said. “I often read things [AI produces], and they just sound too dry and too perfect. I want something from a human being, and I’m disappointed a lot.”
Another reason Wozniak continues to connect with younger audiences is his enduring reputation as an unconventional figure within Silicon Valley.
Unlike executives associated with aggressive corporate expansion, stock valuations, or highly polished public-relations messaging, Wozniak has cultivated an image built around curiosity, humour, and humility.
Even during Apple’s formative years, he reportedly resisted management responsibilities because he preferred engineering work over executive leadership.
His personal history has also reinforced his outsider image. After surviving a plane crash during the 1980s, Wozniak later returned to University of California, Berkeley to complete his undergraduate degree.
According to accounts of that period, he attended classes using the pseudonym “Rocky Raccoon Clark” because he did not want preferential treatment based on his fame.
Ed Bastian & Jensen Huang also received warm reactions
At Emory University, Ed Bastian, chief executive of Delta Air Lines, received a warmer reception after sharing a personal anecdote about experimenting with AI.
Bastian revealed that he had once asked AI to draft his commencement speech but ultimately rejected the result because it lacked emotional depth.
“The lack of soul or warmth it conveyed” convinced him not to use it, Bastian explained.
“So, don’t worry,” he later told graduates. “I threw it away and took pencil to paper.”
The remarks appeared to resonate because, like Wozniak’s comments, they acknowledged limitations within AI-generated communication rather than portraying technology as a flawless replacement for human interaction.
Similarly, Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, encountered relatively little resistance while speaking at Carnegie Mellon University, an institution widely recognised for its role in AI research and computer science.
Huang encouraged students to embrace the opportunities created by AI and told graduates to “Run, don’t walk” toward the technology. He also warned, “AI is not likely to replace you, but someone using AI better than you might.”
Because Carnegie Mellon has deep historical ties to artificial intelligence research, students there may have been more receptive to optimistic discussions surrounding AI innovation and industry transformation.
Why Gen Z remains uneasy about AI
Despite widespread use of AI tools among young people, surveys and employment data suggest Gen Z remains deeply concerned about the broader consequences of automation.
According to the latest Axios Harris Poll, approximately 42 per cent of Gen Z respondents believe AI will negatively affect wages and employment opportunities for people like them.
That figure exceeded the percentage recorded among millennials, Generation X, and baby boomers.
The anxiety is closely tied to current labour market conditions. Recent graduates are entering an economy where many traditional entry-level roles are already being altered or reduced through automation.
Companies including IBM and Klarna have openly discussed using AI to reduce administrative work and streamline staffing requirements.
Meanwhile, firms such as Meta, Pinterest, and Block have recently referenced AI automation while announcing layoffs or restructuring measures.
For graduates attempting to secure their first professional positions, these developments have heightened fears that the lowest rungs of the career ladder may disappear before they even gain access to them.
Gallup figures showed that only 43 per cent of Americans aged between 15 and 34 currently believe it is a good time to find a job. Among Americans aged 55 and older, the equivalent figure stood at 64 per cent, highlighting a substantial generational confidence gap.
At the same time, younger people continue integrating AI into everyday life. Students regularly use AI tools for research, homework assistance, brainstorming, entertainment, and information gathering. The tension therefore is not rooted in simple opposition to technology itself.
Instead, many Gen Z graduates appear conflicted — embracing AI as a useful tool while simultaneously worrying about its long-term implications for employment, creativity, and social interaction.
Many Gen Z users have also grown up immersed in algorithm-driven social media ecosystems and increasingly express frustration with what they see as artificial, over-produced digital culture, especially those who worry that AI-generated writing, music, visual art, and online communication lack authenticity and emotional connection.
