SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi shoot in Hyderabad faces a setback after authorities deny a request for 15 lakh litres of water amid a city-wide shortage.
Filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli’s ambitious project Varanasi has run into an unexpected hurdle, with reports suggesting that the team’s request for a massive water supply in Hyderabad has been turned down.
Request for 150 tankers amid water crisis
According to reports, the makers had sought nearly 15 lakh litres of water, equivalent to around 150 tankers, for an upcoming shoot schedule involving underwater sequences.
According to Telangana Today, the request was made to local authorities in Hyderabad, where the film is currently being shot. However, it was denied due to the city’s ongoing water shortage, especially during peak summer demand. Officials reportedly stated that with residential areas already facing supply pressure, diverting such a large quantity of water for a film shoot was not feasible.

Given the scale of the film, such sequences are expected to be a key visual highlight, in line with Rajamouli’s reputation for grand storytelling.

The film’s first look was unveiled at a grand event at Ramoji Film City, offering a glimpse into its expansive narrative that spans multiple continents and timelines. The story travels across locations including India, Antarctica, Sri Lanka, and Africa, while also delving into the Treta Yuga, set around 5,000 years ago.
Mahesh Babu has also revealed that besides playing the lead character Rudhra, he will portray Lord Rama in flashback sequences. The film is slated for a theatrical release in April 2027.
