Avengers Doomsday trailer out: What to expect from Marvel's ultimate crossover

Marvel Studios has finally dropped the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, offering fans their biggest glimpse yet into the blockbuster that will bring together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most ambitious crossovers.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the filmmakers behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the film is set to hit cinemas on December 18, 2026. If the trailer is any indication, Doomsday isn't simply another superhero ensemble, it is the beginning of the end for the MCU's Multiverse Saga before Avengers: Secret Wars arrives in 2027.

Robert Downey Jr. returns, but not as Iron Man

The biggest talking point is undoubtedly Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU. This time, however, he isn't reprising Tony Stark. Instead, he steps into the role of Victor von Doom, one of Marvel's greatest villains. Interestingly, the makers have still withheld his look as Dr Doom, keeping the intrigue alive despite the release of the first trailer!

The trailer wastes little time establishing Doctor Doom as an overwhelming force. In one of its standout moments, he casually halts Thor's Stormbreaker mid-flight, signalling that the Avengers are facing an enemy whose powers rival, and perhaps surpass, anything they've encountered before.

Unlike Thanos, Doom appears less interested in brute force and more in manipulating reality itself.

Thor leads the Avengers

Chris Hemsworth's Thor appears to be carrying the weight of leadership following Iron Man's death and Steve Rogers' retirement. Gone is much of the humour that defined his recent appearances. The trailer presents a battle-hardened Thor preparing for what may be the MCU's greatest war.

It also teases one of the film's biggest emotional moments- a reunion between Thor and Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, whose return has been the subject of speculation for months.

The Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men finally collide

The trailer confirms what Marvel fans have long hoped for- three of the franchise's biggest superhero teams finally sharing the same screen.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the full-fledged arrival of Fox's X-Men into the MCU. The trailer features:

Rather than functioning as one united team, the trailer suggests these heroes begin as rivals from different realities before being forced into an uneasy alliance.

Loki could hold the key to everything

Tom Hiddleston's God of Stories, last seen safeguarding the multiverse in Loki Season 2, also makes an appearance. Although Marvel keeps his role deliberately vague, his presence suggests that Doom's plans directly threaten the timelines Loki now protects.

The Russo Brothers return to familiar territory

Following the mixed reception to some recent MCU entries, Marvel has once again turned to the Russo Brothers.

Their experience handling sprawling ensemble casts in Infinity War and Endgame appears evident throughout the trailer, which balances multiple storylines without revealing too much of the central conflict.

The reported runtime of around 165 minutes also suggests the studio is treating Doomsday as an event on the scale of its biggest Avengers films.

What can fans expect from Avengers: Doomsday?

Unlike previous Avengers films, Doomsday appears less concerned with assembling heroes than with exploring the tensions between them.

The Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men all arrive with different histories, loyalties and understandings of the multiverse. Before they can stop Doctor Doom, they may first have to overcome their own mistrust.

The trailer also positions Doomsday as the first half of a much larger story, with many of its unanswered questions expected to carry directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to release in December 2027.

From Robert Downey Jr.'s shocking reinvention as Doctor Doom to the long-awaited MCU debut of the X-Men alongside the Fantastic Four, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be Marvel's biggest crossover since Endgame.
