Pranit More and two other comedians appear before National Commission for Women amid 'Rs 370 biryani' row: 'All three apologised during the hearing but…'

Standup comedian Pranit More landed in major trouble when a contestant made a crude remark about biryani that cost him Rs 370. But it cost More a lot more. But the comedian issued an apology recently saying he deserves all the hate he’s getting. More and Himanshu Jangra, a web developer, are at the centre of a controversy over remarks made during a comedy show in Gurugram that allegedly glorified coercion and non-consensual conduct towards a woman.

More, who is facing a police case for allegedly disseminating “obscene and objectionable” content, said he regretted giving a platform to Jangra during a crowd interaction segment.

The National Commission for Women on Monday heard stand-up comedians Pranit More and Madhur Virli, and Himanshu Jangra, the audience member who made 'Rs 370 biryani' remark, over alleged objectionable content against women, and rejected their apology, sources said.

"All three apologised during the hearing, but the commission did not accept the apology," a source said. During the proceedings, chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar expressed profound anguish.

What did the comedian say?

More shared an apology on Instagram and said this in his video- “I wanted to talk about this for a long time but my Instagram account was suspended. You all have seen my crowd work video for which I have been receiving a lot of hate. I think I deserve that hate.”

More added, “Because that guy made derogatory remarks during the crowd work and everyone was laughing, I got carried away. It was a lapse in judgement, and it was my biggest mistake. I want to apologise for the video and derogatory remarks made in it. Whatever legal proceedings are going on, I have been cooperating with the authorities.”
