What began as fan clubs cheering outside theatres has now translated into a full-fledged political force. Vijay’s recent electoral success in Tamil Nadu has caught many off guard, and at the centre of it is an unlikely but highly organised engine- his fans.

From fan clubs to ground-level machinery

For years, Vijay’s fan base has operated through structured local units, organising welfare activities, blood donation drives, and community outreach. But in this election, that same network evolved into something more strategic.

According to BBC News, these fan clubs effectively functioned like grassroots political units, mobilising voters, managing booths, and ensuring turnout on polling day. What sets them apart is scale and discipline, thousands of volunteers working with a sense of personal loyalty rather than just party affiliation.

Who are these supporters?

Unlike traditional party workers, many of Vijay’s supporters are young, first-time political participants, students, small business owners, and daily wage earners who have followed the actor for years.

As per a report by Hindustan Times, this demographic shift played a crucial role. These weren’t seasoned political operatives, they were fans who believed in Vijay’s messaging and stepped in to amplify it. Their connection isn’t ideological in the conventional sense, it’s emotional, built over decades of cinema and public engagement.

Summing it up in his congratulatory message for Vijay, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga wrote, “This is what CINEMA can do, it can move people, shake systems, and turn presence into POWER. Here CINEMA stepping off the screen and owning the ground. Not hype. Not noise. Real power.…My deepest heartfelt congratulations to @actorvijay sir and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.”

The campaign that flew under the radar

One of the biggest reasons behind the surprise result was how quietly the groundwork was laid. While mainstream political parties relied on large rallies and high-decibel campaigns, Vijay’s network focused on hyper-local outreach, door-to-door conversations, small gatherings, and direct voter engagement. This approach, combined with a relatively low-key campaign style, meant that the scale of support wasn’t fully visible until the results came in.

Why it worked

Several factors came together. Firstly, there is strong grassroots network with years of fan club activity created an existing infrastructure. Secondly, there has been youth mobilisation and first-time voters played a key role. Thalapathy Vijay also has an immense personal connect, Vijay’s image translated into trust on the ground.

It may also be noted that the delay in Vijay's film, Jana Nagayan release also worked in his favour for the elections. The hurdles were no less. His strained relationship with family, with reports of divorce and his son unfollowing him doing the rounds seemed like a reputation damage for the actor. Moreover, reactions against Trisha grew strong for her alleged relationship with the star. However, years of appeal as a star for the masses seems to have overrode it.

A shift in Tamil Nadu politics?

Vijay’s win signals something larger than just a celebrity entering politics. It shows how fandom, when organised, can become a powerful political tool, especially in a state where cinema and politics have historically overlapped.

From M. G. Ramachandran to J. Jayalalithaa, Tamil Nadu has seen this transition before. But Vijay’s rise feels distinctly modern- driven by youth energy, decentralised networks, and a digital-era fan base.
