Honda recalls over 1 million vehicles due to faulty tire repair kit; check affected models

Honda Motor Company has initiated a recall of around 1,049,883 vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the tire repair kit, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA-US).

The issue stems from a faulty sealant bottle, in which pressure can build up, potentially causing the cap to detach and launch away like a projectile. The recall includes models such as the Honda Accord, CR-V Fuel Cell EV, and CR-V Hybrid vehicles.

As a remedy, dealers will replace the tire repair kit or sealant bottle free of charge.

The Japanese automaker has also initiated another recall involving faulty rear suspension components that may rust and deteriorate over time, increasing the risk of a crash.

This recall covers approximately 880,514 vehicles, including certain 2016-2022 Honda Pilot, 2017-2023 Honda Ridgeline, 2018-2023 Honda Passport, and 2014-2020 Acura MDX models, according to the NHTSA.

The recall centers on the rear subframe, a key structural component that supports the vehicle's rear suspension system. According to the agency, prolonged exposure to road salt in regions that experience harsh winters can cause the rear subframe to corrode. As the corrosion worsens, the metal may thin out, and normal driving vibrations could eventually lead to fractures or failure at critical mounting points.

Drivers may notice warning signs such as unusual noises, vibrations from the rear suspension, or changes in vehicle handling.

The affected vehicles were sold in several states where road salt is frequently used, including Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C., among others.

To address the issue, Honda dealers will inspect the rear subframe and install a reinforcement kit. If corrosion-related damage is found, the company will repair or replace the affected rear subframe components free of charge.
