IIT Kanpur study finds no evidence E20 petrol damages engines, says mileage impact is minimal

Fresh research from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has found no scientific evidence that E20 petrol causes damage to vehicle engines, offering fresh reassurance as India continues to expand the use of ethanol-blended fuels. Researchers involved in the study also said the effect of E20 on fuel economy is smaller than commonly perceived, countering claims circulating online that the fuel blend significantly reduces vehicle performance or harms engine components.

The findings come days after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that some vehicles may experience a fuel-efficiency reduction of up to five per cent when running on E20 petrol. The ministry, however, maintained that any such decrease is offset by broader environmental gains, including lower lifecycle carbon emissions.

Researchers challenge concerns over engine wear

Speaking about the institute's findings, Dhruv Raj Karana, Project Scientist at the Engine Research Laboratory in IIT Kanpur's Department of Mechanical Engineering, said extensive testing had not revealed any indication that E20 petrol causes engine damage in either newer or older vehicles.

According to Karana, the institute's trials found that any reduction in fuel efficiency remained below the five per cent mark. He explained that such a small variation falls within the range that can occur during routine testing and cannot necessarily be attributed to the fuel itself.

"A similar difference can be observed even if back-to-back tests are repeated with pure petrol," he said, suggesting that normal testing conditions and external variables can influence mileage figures.

Karana also dismissed social media claims suggesting E20 leads to corrosion or mechanical failures, describing such assertions as "scientifically unfounded". He urged vehicle owners to refer to their manufacturers' recommendations and official guidance issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas rather than relying on unverified online information.

Long-term research on ethanol fuels

The IIT Kanpur team said its conclusions are based on years of research into ethanol-blended fuels conducted at the institute's Engine Research Laboratory, which is led by Professor Avinash Kumar Agarwal. The laboratory has examined the performance, durability and emissions characteristics of multiple ethanol blends as India gradually increases ethanol use in conventional transport fuels.

Researchers noted that the laboratory has also carried out successful evaluations of E85 fuel, which contains 85 per cent ethanol. However, they stressed that such high ethanol concentrations are designed for specially engineered vehicles equipped with compatible fuel systems and cannot be directly compared with E20, which is intended for regular commercial use.

The latest findings are likely to add scientific perspective to an issue that has generated considerable debate among motorists since India accelerated its ethanol-blending programme. While concerns over mileage and long-term reliability have persisted, researchers argue that controlled testing does not support claims that E20 damages engines or causes unusual wear.

India has been promoting ethanol blending as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil while lowering emissions from the transport sector. As the rollout continues, experts say evidence-based assessments will play an important role in addressing consumer concerns and ensuring public confidence in the transition to cleaner transport fuels.
