Tesla's Cybercab to feature built-in Starlink antenna, bringing satellite internet to robotaxis
Tesla has confirmed that its upcoming Cybercab will include built-in Starlink connectivity, allowing the autonomous vehicle to access satellite internet beyond traditional mobile networks. The move deepens ties between Elon Musk's companies while supporting Tesla's vision of self-driving robotaxis capable of operating across a wider range of environments.

Tesla has revealed another piece of its long-awaited Cybercab project, confirming that the autonomous vehicle will come equipped with built-in Starlink hardware to provide satellite internet connectivity. The announcement marks a deeper integration between Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker and his satellite internet company, SpaceX, as Tesla prepares to roll out its driverless robotaxi fleet.
The company unveiled the feature on Monday through social media, where both Tesla and Starlink highlighted the addition. Starlink described the technology as "High-speed internet from space for the future of autonomous vehicles," while Tesla disclosed that the Cybercab would be fitted with Starlink's newly introduced V5 antenna.
The addition is expected to help the vehicle maintain internet access in areas where conventional mobile networks are weak or unavailable, an important capability for autonomous vehicles that rely heavily on continuous connectivity for navigation, updates and passenger services.
Satellite internet designed for life beyond mobile coverage
According to Tesla, the Cybercab will not rely solely on satellite communication. The vehicle is also expected to feature 5G LTE connectivity alongside a dedicated GPS antenna, enabling multiple methods of staying connected and accurately locating itself.
The Starlink V5 antenna is positioned at the rear of the vehicle and is significantly more compact than previous versions. Weighing around 2.4 pounds, it is considerably lighter than the earlier 6.5-pound model, making it more suitable for installation on vehicles. Despite its smaller footprint, the hardware is capable of delivering download speeds of more than 375Mbps under suitable conditions.
The satellite link could prove especially useful in rural locations or cellular dead zones where conventional mobile coverage is unreliable. Beyond supporting autonomous driving systems, the connection may also improve onboard entertainment and other internet-based services available to passengers.
Evidence of the integration had surfaced before Tesla's official confirmation. An Apple project manager visiting Tesla's showroom in San Jose shared photographs showing a Cybercab display referencing Starlink integration. Earlier, a Reddit user also posted images of two Cybercabs being tested in Austin, Texas, both carrying what appeared to be Starlink hardware mounted at the rear.
Tesla has also recently filed a patent describing technology that integrates radio antennas directly into a vehicle's roof, signalling broader efforts to refine wireless connectivity in future vehicles.
Custom hardware points to a robotaxi-focused future
Although the standard Starlink V5 hardware is marketed for stationary installations, fresh evidence suggests SpaceX has been developing a specialised version tailored for vehicles.
Ukrainian repair expert Oleg Kutkov said he discovered references within Starlink firmware to an automotive-specific V5 model identified as "rev5_pez_auto_proto1." According to Kutkov, the customised version replaces some antenna elements with a built-in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, enabling the dish to function while the vehicle is moving.
He also said the automotive version is engineered to withstand higher operating temperatures before reducing performance or shutting down, making it more suitable for use in demanding driving conditions.
The Cybercab itself represents one of Tesla's boldest attempts to redefine personal transportation. Designed as a two-passenger electric vehicle, it eliminates traditional driving controls such as a steering wheel and pedals, relying entirely on onboard autonomous driving software. The vehicle is intended to become part of Tesla's future robotaxi network, with the company having begun initial production during the second quarter of this year.
However, the rollout remains in its early stages. Tesla is conducting limited testing of the Cybercab as it continues refining its autonomous technology, an area that has attracted significant regulatory scrutiny following previous concerns over the safety of the company's self-driving systems.
The inclusion of Starlink highlights Tesla's broader strategy of combining multiple technologies from Musk's business empire into a single ecosystem. By pairing satellite communications with autonomous driving, Tesla is aiming to create robotaxis capable of remaining connected even in places where traditional wireless networks fall short, a capability that could become increasingly important as self-driving vehicles expand beyond urban centres.
