Audi’s China-specific sub-brand, which follows the same German ideology without the four-ring symbol, has shown signs of an ongoing struggle in the market. The deliveries of its debut E5 Sportback began in August 2025; however, the car was able to accrue a sales figure of only 605 units in January, prompting Audi to bring in a limited-time discount to the rescue. The E5 Sportback was built on a joint-venture platform with partner SAIC.

The offer ran until 31st March and combined a purchase tax subsidy, cash rebate, and trade-in premiums.

Audi’s prospective home run was marred by reports of bug-ridden software and problems with the vehicle’s air conditioners ever since launch. Audi took heed of the issues and launched an upgraded variant in November. The E5 Sportback has drawn unfavourable comparisons to its local competitors on charging speed. Even though the Audi uses an 800V architecture capable of delivering 350 km of range in 15 minutes, competitive brands manage a more impressive 400 km in 10 minutes.

A reshuffle of its Chinese leadership has further established that Audi might be trying to mitigate the issues it has been facing. The reshuffle puts Audi in tune with BMW and Mercedes, which have also recently reorganised their leadership boards in China.

Reason behind the struggle

In China, native brands have accounted for roughly two-thirds of domestic retail car sales in 2025, up from 40% five years earlier. Audi China’s sales fell 5% last year to 617,514 vehicles, with fully electric sales down 44%.

Volkswagen, the parent company of Audi, has been struggling in China as well. In a recent interview with Manager Magazin, VW Group CEO Oliver Blume said that it plans to reduce its annual capacity by another half a million units. Blume further added that he wants to avoid plant closures and will not rule out selling one to a Chinese competitor as he moves ahead to reduce capacity in Europe and China. Volkswagen, just like the rest of the manufacturers, has been witnessing intense competition from local manufacturers and a shrinking market.

The E5 Sportback competes with rivals like the Zeekr 007 GT and the Xiaomi SU7, both of which are very popular in China. The E5 Sportback, Audi’s contender in this market, features a single rear-mounted motor paired with a 76.0 kWh battery pack, producing 295 horsepower and delivering a claimed range of 348 km on the CLTC cycle. A Quattro variant of the E5 uses a larger 100.0 kWh battery and generates close to 776 horsepower. Whether Audi clears the waters and establishes itself in the Chinese market or struggles like other European brands will get much clearer overtime.
