2026 Mercedes-Benz S-class debuts with hybrid power: Here's what's new

Mercedes-Benz has launched the all-new 2026 S-Class with a host of exterior and interior revisions, upgraded technology, and, for the first time, a hybrid powertrain. The 2026 S-Class is priced at Rs 2.20 crore for the standard variant and Rs 2.38 crore for the AMG Line trim (both ex-showroom), compared to the outgoing model, which was priced from Rs 1.85 crore.

Mercedes S-Class powertrain specifications

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the new S 450e Hybrid as the latest member of the S-Class lineup. The sedan is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine paired with a rear-mounted electric motor and a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The combined system output stands at 435 hp and 680 Nm of torque, with power being sent to the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

Mercedes claims an all-electric driving range of up to 115 km for the S 450e, while the luxury sedan can sprint from 0-100 kmph in a claimed 5.7 seconds. The automaker also states that the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes using a 60 kW DC fast charger. Overall fuel efficiency is rated at a claimed 32.3 kmpl.

New S-Class features

The new S-Class comes equipped with the MBUX Superscreen setup, consisting of a 14.4-inch OLED touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an additional 12.3-inch display for the front passenger.

The MBUX system is now integrated with Google Maps and an augmented-reality head-up display. The infotainment system also supports over-the-air software updates.

Other standout features include a Burmester 4D surround sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected-car technology, and a four-zone automatic climate control system.

Safety and driver-assistance technologies include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, a surround-view camera system, and multiple airbags.

For added ride comfort, the 2026 S-Class comes standard with adaptive air suspension and E-Active Body Control. To improve maneuverability in tight urban environments, the luxury sedan is also equipped with rear-wheel steering, which can turn up to 4.5 degrees.

Inside, the cabin adopts a more technology-focused layout. Along with a redesigned dashboard, updates to the center console and other interior elements help the cabin feel more contemporary and luxurious.

A hybrid powertrain for the S-Class for the first time

The 2026 S-Class marks the first time the flagship luxury sedan is being offered with a hybrid powertrain. Alongside the standard variant, an AMG Line version will also be available at Rs 2.38 crore.

For decades, the S-Class has stood as the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz engineering, showcasing the brand's most advanced technologies and serving as a testbed for its most extravagant and powerful engines. However, changing global priorities have now reached even Mercedes' flagship sedan. With the introduction of the S 450e Hybrid, the S-Class begins a new chapter, gradually moving away from the era of large-capacity V12 and V8 engines in favor of electrified performance and improved efficiency.
