The identities of the women who accused Brij Bhushan and filed the case against him had not been made public earlier, but Vinesh decided to reveal herself as one of the petitioners after the WFI chose to host the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, Brij Bhushan’s hometown, at one of his properties. Vinesh raised concerns regarding her safety, which were brushed aside by the current WFI president Sanjay Singh, who is considered a close aide of Brij Bhushan, a former BJP MP from Gonda.

Vinesh Phogat vs Wrestling Federation Live Updates: Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat and Wrestling Federation of India are engaged in a stand-off ahead of the National Open Ranking Tournament. The event would have marked the comeback of Phogat to competitive wrestling after she announced her retirement from the mat following the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Phogat, who is also a Congress MLA from Haryana, is now engaged in a full-blown battle against the federation which has barred her from competing in the tournament. Her much-anticipated return on the mat was derailed as WFI termed her ineligible to compete till June 2026 due to anti-doping-related return protocols and pending disciplinary proceedings.

Vinesh arrives in Gonda

The WFI, led by Sanjay Singh, had issued a 15-page show-cause notice to Phogat on Saturday, stating that she was ineligible to compete in the tournament. The federation had cited a mandatory six-month notice period for athletes coming out of retirement under anti-doping rules.

However, Phogat has still arrived in Gonda to compete in the tournament, claiming that she has already informed the relevant international authorities well in advance about her decision to return from retirement.

The WFI is still not satisfied. “The reply is not enough. "She has not answered the full show-cause notice. Until a disciplinary hearing is conducted and the matter is decided, she cannot be permitted to compete,” a WFI source was quoted by news agency Press Trust of India as saying.

However, Phogat has declared: "I am eligible to participate in the 2026 Senior Open Ranking Tournament at Nandini Nagar, Gonda scheduled for May 10-12, 2026. Having completed my registration for the same, I do intend to participate in the Tournament and mark my return to the mat in a competitive event.
